Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4 2023 with a new Deep Black Design

Lenovo has given the ThinkPad X13 Yoga a complete makeover with the introduction of the ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4, marking a significant redesign for 2023. The X series is known for being the smallest and most portable range of ThinkPad laptops in the enterprise segment.

Unlike other manufacturers, Lenovo doesn’t overhaul its ThinkPad designs annually. Instead, they opt for a reliable redesign every two years, which they refer to as a “clean sheet” approach, where the design process starts from scratch.

The new Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 embodies this clean sheet redesign. While the new version does receive the expected processor upgrade, transitioning from Alder Lake to Raptor Lake, the convertible remains exclusive to Intel, with no AMD variant available at the moment.

However, the focus here is not solely on the internal specifications. The first noticeable change is the exterior aesthetics. Lenovo has reversed the color scheme, returning to the classic jet black, aptly named “Deep Black” by the company, after transitioning to dark gray with the ThinkPad X13 G1 to X13 Yoga G2. Nonetheless, a silver-grey option is still available. Alongside the color change, Lenovo has also made a shift in materials, incorporating a greater amount of recycled aluminum and magnesium into the construction of the X-ThinkPads. Additionally, the display lid of the ThinkPad X13 Yoga G4 is now made of magnesium, replacing the carbon fiber plastic used in its predecessor.

The keyboard of the ThinkPad retains its 1.5mm key travel, similar to previous models. However, unlike its predecessor, the keyboard is no longer easily replaceable by the user. The overall thickness of the laptop has been significantly reduced from 18.1mm to 15.95mm, resulting in a decrease in minimum weight from 1.21kg to 1.14kg.

Moreover, the X13 Yoga G4 is not only thinner and lighter but also smaller in terms of width and length compared to its predecessors. This size reduction contributes to narrower display bezels, consequently increasing the display-to-body ratio. To achieve this, the X series adopts the “reverse notch” design found in the ThinkPad Z series and the ThinkPad X13s. As an added benefit, this design change allows for the inclusion of a new optional 5-megapixel camera, as it eliminates the need for a protruding “camera bump.”
