Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 is the latest variant in its premium ThinkPad X1 series. Lenovo has a brand new design up its sleeve for the 2024 version of the high-end laptop for CEOs, frequent travelers, and high-end business computing.

TrackPoint buttons or larger touchpad: buyers have the choice

The first noticeable change is in the input devices: a large, haptic trackpad from ThinkPad Z series. The forcepad, lacking dedicated keys for the red TrackPoint, provides a sizeable touchpad area, benefiting touchpad users. However, loyal ThinkPad users who rely on the TrackPoint might not welcome this change. Fortunately, the X1 Carbon G12 offers a classic design option with a mechanical touchpad and dedicated TrackPoint buttons, allowing buyers to choose.

It’s not just this one change in the area of input devices. Lenovo swapped the FN and left Ctrl keys, a move in line with almost all other Windows laptops. The new keyboard features a fingerprint reader integrated into the keypad. Additionally, it introduces new tactile markers on specific keys, such as FN, Insert, or the volume keys, to enhance usability for visually impaired users.

With the new design, Lenovo has also reduced the size of the display frame. In exchange, the Lenovo X1 Carbon latest model adopts a reverse notch design, providing extra space for the new 8MP webcam.

Lenovo X1 Carbon with the latest Core Ultra, 5G, 120 Hz OLED, 64 GB RAM

The Lenovo X1 Carbon latest model benefits significantly from CPU giant Intel’s development assistance. Therefore, it is no surprise that Meteor Lake is used exclusively. Lenovo aims to enhance the new CPUs’ potential with an upgraded, larger dual-fan cooling system. The rather weak cooling system of the previous generation was one of our main criticisms – so we are looking forward to the performance development of this new model.

Fortunately, the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon G12 retains all the advantages of the older models in terms of ports and weight. It still has many legacy ports such as USB-A and HDMI, and the weight is still pleasantly low at just 1.09 kg. It will launch with 5G LTE, with up to 64GB of LPDDR5X storage and up to 2TB of SSD storage. The battery capacity remains at 57 Wh, as before. WiFi 7 is new, and the 2024 ThinkPad X1 Carbon also has a new premium display option: a 120 Hz OLED panel.
