As every year at CES, Lenovo updates its X1 ThinkPads. 1 ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2020 and second is ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2020 rely on Intel Comet-Lake, brighter LCD panels, and a slightly revised keyboard.
For the new year 2020 and CES, Lenovo has once again introduced new ThinkPad laptops; More specific: The ThinkPad X1 Carbon 8, which is still the lightest and most compact 14-inch ThinkPad laptop, and the ThinkPad X1 Yoga 5, whose convertible laptop with an aluminum housing.
However, the first Lenovo ThinkPads of the new decade do not do anything new, because the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2020 and the ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2020 adopt the design and housing of their predecessors X1 Carbon 2019 (pricing starts from $1000 on Amazon and Bhphotovideo) and X1 Yoga 2019 (pricing starts from $1300 on Amazon and Bhphotovideo).
The processors of X1 Carbon Gen 8 and X1 Yoga Gen 5, on the other hand, are new – Intel Whiskey Lake is being replaced by Intel Comet Lake – a comparatively small CPU update, which nevertheless has higher clock speeds and the hexacore option, On the other hand, it is somewhat disappointing that Lenovo continues to offer 16GB LPDDR3-RAM as the maximum for these models – 32GB LPDDR4X should actually be possible with Comet-Lake.
Apart from new processors, there are some brighter display options: For both models, the LCD brightness of the optional Privacy Full HD display increases from 400 to 500 cd/m². With the X1 Carbon G8, Lenovo also increases the brightness of the optional Full HD touchscreen from 300 to 400 cd/m².
The keyboard remains basically the same as the predecessor. However, there are new function keys for the X1 Carbon 8th Gen and X1 Yoga 5th Gen – as a double assignment for F9 to F11, there are now communication functions that are similar to the latest ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II announced at CES 2020.
Lenovo does not specify a specific release date for the two new X1 ThinkPad laptops, instead, they only declare that they will be launched in 2020. After all, you’re specific about the prices: The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 8 will cost $1,499, while the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 5 should cost at least $1,599.
