Lenovo ThinkPad P16v workstation gets a new design with dual-fan cooling and a 16:10 upgrade

Lenovo takes a significant leap forward with the ThinkPad P16v, as it moves from a 16:9 screen aspect ratio to a more modern 16:10 aspect ratio. This update comes hand in hand with a complete redesign, heavily influenced by the ThinkPad P16. The new design features top-base hinges and dual-fan cooling. Additionally, the ThinkPad P16v now includes Ada GPUs.

The ThinkPad P16v remains the more affordable alternative to the ThinkPad P16 Gen 2. However, one notable change this year is that the ThinkPad P16v closely resembles its higher-priced counterpart, the P16. Design modifications include the shift from drop-down hinges to a traditional top-base design. This alteration allowed for the relocation of the fan outputs to the rear, resulting in dual-fan cooling. It’s important to note that the P15v only had one fan.

Similar to the P16, the P16v sports a red decorative stripe on the back. However, unlike its pricier sibling, the ThinkPad P16v is entirely coated in “Thunder Black” instead of “Storm Grey”. Other external enhancements include a larger touchpad, an additional Thunderbolt 4 port, and the integration of the fingerprint reader into the power button.

The ThinkPad P16v has also undergone significant internal remodeling. The battery capacity has been increased from 68 Wh to 90 Wh, and the RAM capacity has been expanded from a maximum of 64 GB to 96 GB. Like its predecessor, the P16v retains two M.2 slots, supporting up to 4 TB of SSD storage. However, unlike the ThinkPad P16 Gen 2, it does not support PCIe 5.0 SSDs.

In terms of performance, there are noticeable downgrades compared to the more expensive ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 model. The P16v features H45 CPUs from the Raptor Lake series instead of the HX55, and the maximum graphics chip available is the RTX 2000 Ada instead of the RTX 5000 Ada. Furthermore, Lenovo sells the P16v with inexpensive 45% NTSC WUXGA displays, instead of the higher quality entry-level panels. However, there is an optional 800 cd/m² display with WQUXGA resolution (3840×2400), which is the same as the one offered in the ThinkPad P16.

Price and release date

The Lenovo ThinkPad P16v starts at $1,897 for the base model, equipped with an i5-13500H, 12 cores, Iris Xe graphics, 2x8GB SO-DIMM, 512GB SSD, and a 16-inch WUXGA display. It is now available for pre-order on the Bhphotovideo.com online store.
