QNAP TS-x73A Network Storage Devices with 2.5 Gbit/s, AMD Ryzen, PCIe, and up to 8 bays

With the TS-x73A series, QNAP is bringing new network storage devices based on AMD processors to the market. New QNAP NAS drives come with up to 64 gigabytes of RAM, two 2.5 Gbit/s Ethernet, and PCIe 3.0.

QNAP TS-473A-8G network storage devices

First of all: With the network storage devices of the TS-x73A series, the QNAP has small and medium-sized companies in its sights, which is reflected in the equipment and also the price, according to its own statements. Private users should usually travel more cheaply with the manufacturer’s smaller systems. The network-attached storage is all based on the Ryzen V1500B.

The chip comes with four processing cores, which process eight threads and can access a working memory of up to 64 gigabytes. This can be found in two DDR4 SODIMM slots, whereby ECC memory is supported. The equipment includes two PCIe Gen 3 slots with four lanes, with which the functional scope of the network memory can be expanded – specifically with a 10 Gbit/s network card, a WiFi adapter, or a card for connecting to the manufacturer’s expansion units.

Two PCIe NVMe slots are provided for installing fast SSDs, which means that SSD caching and Qtier can be used. In the delivery state, the connection to a network takes place via two RJ45 ports with a gross data rate of 2.5 Gbit / s each. Depending on the model variant, four, six, or eight mass storage devices can be installed, whereby both 3.5 and 2.5-inch data carriers are supported.

As is customary for NAS systems, the range of functions goes far beyond pure data backup. The app-based operating system QTS supports, among other things, release, backup, and data protection functions and is also intended to reduce the threat of ransomware by creating snapshots. The network storage devices also support running virtual machines and managing a video surveillance system. QuTS hero can also be installed and, unlike QTS, is based on the ZFS file system.

The Ryzen processors also allow the complex processing of videos and images, GPU passthrough is supported. According to the manufacturer, the systems are available immediately. The QNAP TS-473A-8G is already listed at Amazon.com for around $779 – without hard drives and with an eight-gigabyte DDR4 memory.

Recently, TerraMaster has added the F8-422 simple storage network to its range. It is built on a quad-core Intel Celeron J3455 processor, clocked at 1.5-2.3 GHz, the amount of RAM is 8 GB, and is priced at $1,299.99.
