Boss GX-100 Compact Guitar Effects Processor with many Functions

It’s been 4 years since Boss introduced the last huge multi-effects board with the GT-1000, and two years later the GT-1000CORE version was introduced. With the Boss GX-100 guitar effects processor, there may now be a suitable successor to the 10-year-old GT-100.

So far, Boss had only used the GX model series for the Rack-FX GX-700, the floorboards were mostly “GT”. We’re a little surprised by the change in name, given that the new Boss GX 100 has almost nothing in common with the GX-700. Both are multi-effects, but that’s where it ends.

The Boss GX100 could be the successor to the GT-100, which looks pretty old at 10 years old. That doesn’t mean it sounds bad, but the digital world has moved on since then, and there’s a lot more to come.

For the first time, a colored touch screen has been introduced into a Boss guitar effect pedals, which seems a bit narrower and higher than that of the GT-1000. The AD/DA conversion takes place in 24 bits, the effects and amps are calculated with 32 bits FP, at a sample rate of 48 kHz. A total of 23 amplifiers and more than 150 effect pedals are available, which can be virtually wired in 15 blocks. The AIRD technology behind it is known from the GT-1000. The order of the effects can optionally be shifted via touch. Loudspeaker impulse responses are also included and can be used asWAV to be imported.

A total of 8 footswitches are installed: four for effects, two for bank up/down, and C1 and C2. The latter also activate the built-in tuner and are basically freely assignable and can also send control signals to the amplifier. The Expression rocker can be activated with the familiar toe switch in the top position (like the Cry-Baby). In addition, there are four knobs below the display for various parameters and the set of (8) well-known push switches on Multi-FX along with push controls for programming and a master volume. That shouldn’t be a big hurdle.

The Boss GX-100 has the input, dual mono output, FX loop send and return, headphone jack, MIDI 5-pin DIN in and out, amp CTL 1/2, and CTL 3/4 on which a second expression Pedal can be connected. In addition, a USB-B connection, with which the multi-effect is supplied with impulse responses and later certainly firmware updates, can be programmed in the editor and also used as a USB audio interface.

Apparently, the matching 9V, 1200mA power supply is not included. We find it a bit poor with an all-in-one solution. On the other hand, we all probably have enough lying around at home, and the optional 10-20 bucks certainly don’t make it fat anymore.

Boss GX-100 price and availability

The Boss GX-100 guitar effects processor is now available to pre-order on Bhphotovideo.com at $599.99, and shipping is scheduled for April 2022.
