Avantone Gauss 7 Classic Studio Monitor in Modern Design

Avantone has already made some famous studio monitor speakers and developed their own designs from them. Be it the MixCubes or the CLA-10, the new interpretations always bring their own ideas with them but reflect the tonal qualities of the templates. The latest audio monitor speaker is called Gauss 7 and is based on products from the Gauss Speaker Company, which were popular studio tools in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Gauss 7 does not want to be a replica of a certain model, but rather a kind of “best-of” with new concepts.

During the development, one characteristic of the vintage models seemed to have been particularly important: The bass range should have a “bang” – let’s take a look at exactly what the manufacturer means by that.

But first a few words about the general properties that Avantone promises us here. This includes a “smoother” frequency response and, according to the manufacturer, an “impressive” stereo display. The folded foil membrane of the AMT driver should deliver an accurate and transparent sound image and have a detailed transient behavior.

Well, that sounds like exactly the announcements that pretty much every audio monitor manufacturer makes. What’s in this 2-way speaker? The 65 mm GAU-AMT tweeter patented by Avantone is made of PET and is intended to reduce unwanted reflections. The tweeter enables a frequency response that extends up to 22 kHz.

The 7-inch woofer is based on the further development of the AV10-MLF, the bass range is expanded while the transients are still reproduced quickly. Gauss 7 starts at 30 Hz – that’s quite remarkable.

The class D amplifiers each deliver 120 watts for the woofer and 60 watts for the tweeter. On the back there is the mandatory gain control, a three-stage switch for adaptation to the room (with 0 dB, -2 dB and -4 dB) and the high trim (-2 dB, 0 dB, +2 dB). XLR and jack are available as inputs.
