Warm Audio WA-67: An affordable return of the Legend U67 Microphone?

Warm Audio wants to delight us with another classic studio microphone. After the new revision of the WA-87 a few weeks ago, it is now the turn of a coveted tube condenser mic. While the manufacturer only speaks of “the legend” and the “original from 1967”, we can call the child by name: WA-67 is a replica of the Neumann U67.

The WA-67 is based on an EF86 pentode tube, so Warm Audio promises the “same smooth and creamy sound as the original”. The condenser microphones are set to become the first choice for vocals, guitars, drum toms, overheads, piano, brass, and strings.

In order to do justice to the properties of the EF86 tube and the specially manufactured capsule, the manufacturer relies on boutique components. So come polystyrene capacitors with oversized capacity, polypropylene capacitors from Wima, and an output capacitor from solen.

The large core transformer comes from Lundahl and plays an important role in the high-frequency range. A very plastic sound should distinguish this studio mic through the circuits.

The microphone has three directional characteristics (cardioid, omnidirectional, figure-eight), which you can change with a slide switch on the front. Further features are a switchable 80 Hz high-pass filter and a pad for 10 dB reduction.

The scope of delivery includes a wooden box, shock mount, hard-mount, power supply, and 7-pin mic cable from Gotham Audio.

Today, HyperX has also unveiled the SoloCast USB microphone for streamers and multimedia creators. The advantages of the HyperX microphone include the presence of a touch switch and an LED status indicator, as well as a cardio-diode radiation pattern, which makes it possible to separate the useful signal from the surrounding background.
