With the Xperia 5 III, Sony has presented a slightly cheaper, more compact version of the Xperia 1 III. You have to do without a few features, but the high-quality Sony Xperia 2021 smartphone offers a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 and the same exciting camera system from Sony’s new flagship.
In addition to the Sony Xperia 1III, Sony today also introduced the successor to the Xperia 5 II ($848 on Bhphotovideo and Amazon). The equipment is strongly reminiscent of the new flagship because the Xperia 5 III also relies on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC and the same triple camera, which consists of an ultra-wide-angle camera with a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 16 mm and a 24 mm wide-angle camera and the telephoto camera with variable focal length, which offers either a focal length of 70 mm or 105 mm.
All three cameras have a resolution of 12 MP. The smartphone has Zeiss lenses, but you have to do without a few features from the flagship, especially object tracking via real-time tracking. Even the cheaper model can record 20 photos per second or 4K videos at 120 frames per second. There is a dedicated shutter release on the side of the smartphone.
The biggest difference between the two devices is the display: Instead of the 6.5-inch 4K OLED panel, the Xperia 5 III uses a 6.1 inch 1080p + OLED display with a frame rate of up to 120 Hz and a touch sampling rate of 240 Hz. The device has front-facing stereo speakers, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a 4,500 mAh battery, which is 12.5 percent larger than its predecessor.
