Sony has introduced the next generation of its highest quality best noise cancelling wireless headphones. The Sony WH1000XM5 gets a brand new design and several exciting upgrades, but Sony has also increased the price.

The Sony 1000XM5 has just been officially launched. The over-ear headphones get a brand new design that looks like an evolution of the Sony WH-1000XM4 with strong curves and a fundamentally redesigned headband. Playback is still controlled by gesture control through the touch-sensitive surface on the outside of the headphones, with a dedicated button allowing noise cancellation to be activated.

Sony makes big promises in this area – the active noise cancellation (ANC) is said to be “industry-leading”, compared to the previous model, higher frequencies, in particular, are blocked out more effectively, including human voices. The WH-1000XM4’s 40mm drivers have been replaced with new 30mm drivers, which are said to offer both a more natural sound and more detailed sound with better bass reproduction.

According to a first Sony WH-1000XM5 review test by The Verge, the new Sony noise canceling headphones offer a more balanced sound and better noise cancellation, as well as better call quality, which is made possible by a total of eight microphones. There is criticism for the many plastic components, which are not appropriate for the price, and for the carrying case that is too large.

The battery lasts 30 hours with ANC or 40 hours without noise cancellation. As expected, Sony relies on LDAC to achieve the best possible audio quality over Bluetooth, but Qualcomm aptX is not supported. The Sony XM5 supports Bluetooth Multipoint, Fast Pair, DSEE Extreme, and 360 Reality Audio.

Sony WH1000XM5 price and availability

The Sony WH1000XM5 is available now in Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk online stores at the recommended retail price of $398 / £380. Sony XM5 release date is May 20, 2022, and it comes in Black and White colors.
