Polyend Play Groovebox

Play is a sample-based groovebox that focuses on making beats easy and creative. Over 3000 samples are included, which can be assembled into beats using the grid with 8 x 16 buttons on eight audio tracks. An “intelligent categorization” should make it easier to find sounds. However, the device cannot sample itself and does not have an audio input.

The sequencer offers 35 different playback modes and provides varied grooves with functions such as chance and action combos, randomize and step repeater. The pattern length, tempo, playback mode, and swing factor can be set separately for each track, and 16 variations are available per track. There’s also an interesting Smart Fill feature that automatically fills any range with full beats, randomized steps, or Euclidean distributions. That is how new grooves are created in no time at all.

For performances, Play offers various effects such as tune, filter, overdrive, rearranger, and reverb. It is also possible to record automation during operation, also using a connected MIDI controller.

In addition to the eight audio tracks, Play offers eight polyphonic MIDI tracks. Thus, the Groovebox can also sequence and control external equipment and is suitable as the control center of a live setup.

In addition to a USB-C connection, Play has a MicroSD card slot, MIDI In/Out, and a stereo audio output. Both MIDI and the audio output are designed as mini-jack sockets, which unfortunately looks a bit semi-professional. Suitable adapters for 5-pin DIN sockets or two 6.3 mm jack sockets are included. Power is supplied via USB and should also work on a power bank.

Polyend Play Groovebox price and availability

Last year, Novation introduced the Circuit Tracks all-in-one groovebox with two polyphonic digital synths tracks, four drum tracks, new effects, and functions, and is priced at $399.99.
