The G Master full-frame lens series from Sony is growing: The Sony FE 35mm f1.4 GM (model SEL-35F14GM) wide angle lens offers photographers and videographers a wide range of expressive options with – according to Sony – “first-class image quality and excellent bokeh” in an extremely compact and lightweight design.
In combination with the cameras from Sony, the 35mm f1.4 offers a wide range of focusing functions for a wide range of applications such as landscape, portrait and street photography, photography, and filming.
The optical design and manufacturing technology from Sony enable a particularly high resolution up to the edge zones, harmonious bokeh effects, and precise focusing performance, both automatically (AF) and manually. The wide lens is very compact that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, weighs just 524 grams, and measures just 76 x 96 millimeters with a filter diameter of 67 millimeters.
Sony’s optical technology for high contrast and sharpness is based on a new design with two XA (Extreme Aspherical) lens elements, which ensure that the high resolution is maintained over the entire image area. The compact 35-millimeter lens is very handy and is particularly useful in difficult lighting conditions. An ED glass element and other optical refinements effectively suppress both chromatic aberrations and violet color fringes.
The FE 35MM F1.4 GM has an almost circular aperture with its construction of 11 blades, which leads to a balanced bokeh that matches the other G Master lenses. The 2 XA elements also allow close-ups with smooth, even bokeh effects. The maximum aperture of F1.4 and the flexibility in choosing the perfect recording distance (minimum focus distance of only 27 centimeters with 0.23x maximum magnification in autofocus mode) ensure creative control when taking photos and videos.
Two Sony XD (eXtreme Dynamic) linear motors provide the speed necessary for precise AF (autofocus) and exact tracking from any distance. Control algorithms specially developed for the XD linear motors improve responsiveness and precision, while at the same time minimizing vibrations and noise for fast, fluid, and quiet AF operation. A very high focusing performance can be achieved even at high frame rates.
The linear manual focus setting ensures that the focus ring reacts directly to the smallest changes when focusing manually – ideal for creative focusing effects in video recordings. Turning the focus ring is immediately converted into a corresponding change in focus so that control is immediate and precise.
The FE 35MM F1.4 GM offers comprehensive, professional control options. A focus hold button and a focus adjustment switch contribute to smooth, efficient operation. The notches on the aperture ring can be switched off for silent operation when filming, and with APS-C housings or Super 35 viewing angle settings, the SEL-35F14GM can be used as a standard lens (corresponding to 52.5MM) – the perfect solution for video recordings. Using the menu on the camera, photographers and videographers can assign various other functions to the focus hold button to have direct access to it. The dust and moisture-proof design ensure reliability, as does the fluorine coating on the front element, which protects against water, oil, and other contaminants.
