Biostar TZ590-BTC mining motherboard announced

Biostar unveiled its latest TZ590-BTC motherboard designed specifically for crypto miners. The new mining motherboard has several features that should make it interesting for BTC and Ethereum miners. That includes support for up to 9 graphics cards.

It’s a normal mainboard in ATX format, equipped with an Intel socket 1200. It’s a pity that Biostar doesn’t immediately support the newer Intel Alder Lake processors with socket 1700. The other main features at a glance:

• 4x DDR4 slots for a maximum of 128 GB Ram at a maximum clock rate of 3,600 MHz
• 1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slot (x8 mode)
• 8 x PCIe 3.0 x1 slots
• 6x SATA III (6Gb/s) ports
• 1x M.2 (M Key) socket (M2_PCIEG4_64G_2)
• 6x USB 3.2 Gen1 ports
• Other connections such as HDMI, LAN, etc.

At first glance, it is a mid-range motherboard with the corresponding equipment. Only the high number of available PCIe slots indicate the target group of miners. In its press release and on the official product page, Biostar itself speaks of numerous other customer groups such as gamers and content creators, but these would probably rather choose other, better-fitting mainboards.

Bitcoin and Ethereum miners are the real customers

So if you look at the number and arrangement of the existing PCIe slots, the board can only be used in a mining rack. The Biostar TZ590-BTC has a PCIe x16 slot and a further eight PCIe x1 slots to be able to operate a total of nine graphics cards simultaneously. These are then connected to the mainboard and mounted on the mining rack via special connection adapters, so-called risers (not included in the scope of delivery). The Biostar TZ590-BTC is therefore intended more for miners who want to build their own mining rack.
