Garmin D2 Mach 1 Pro titanium smartwatch combines ECG with pilot features

Garmin introduces the upgraded Garmin D2 Mach 1 Pro, featuring advanced capabilities such as a titanium body with a water resistance rating of 10 ATM, a high-resolution AMOLED display incorporating redshift mode, a flashlight with a choice of red or white illumination, and an integrated electrocardiogram (ECG).

Following the launch of the Garmin D2 Mach 1 (approx. $1,200 on Amazon) in 2022, the Pro version has now been unveiled, boasting a slightly larger diameter of 51 millimeters compared to the base model’s 47 millimeters. The Pro model introduces several enhancements, including an ECG for detecting cardiac arrhythmias and an LED flashlight with adjustable brightness.

The flashlight can emit a red glow if needed, preventing vision impairment in low-light conditions, such as illuminating an aircraft cockpit at night. Garmin utilizes the larger case to accommodate a 1.4-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels. The Red Shift mode turns the screen red to mitigate blue light’s impact on pupil dilation and improve nighttime vision.

With an extended battery life, Garmin claims a runtime of 25 days under normal usage, 10 days with the always-on display, or 46 hours during continuous “flying” activities with an active GPS module and SpO2 sensor. The durable case, crafted from titanium, sapphire crystal, and fiber-reinforced polymer, ensures water resistance up to 10 ATM.

The device caters to a diverse user base with its fitness tracking features, sleep monitoring, integrated golf maps, music streaming apps, Garmin Pay support, and the option to install third-party apps via Garmin Connect IQ. However, its primary focus remains on pilots.

Targeted at aviators, the smartwatch incorporates advanced aviation features, including a map app with NEXRAD radar overlay, an aviation weather app, a Meteogram app, a barometric altimeter, and an emergency mode displaying glide speed and the direction to the nearest runway.
