Canon EOS R7, EOS R10 Cameras, and Two RF-S Lenses Introduced

Canon is expanding its mirrorless camera and lens system with the launch of the new Canon R7 and Canon R10 cameras and Canon RF-S 18-45mm f4.5-6.3 IS and Canon RF-S 18-150mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM lenses.

As the new camera models of the “Canon EOS R” system, the EOS R7 and EOS R10 adopt the intelligent autofocus technology of the high-performance Canon full-frame cameras for the APS-C format. Thanks to deep learning and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, dynamic subjects such as vehicles, animals, and people are recognized and tracked over 100% of the sensor area with precise head, face, and eye detection.

The Canon EOS R7 and EOS R10 offer autofocus in low-light environments down to -5 EV and -4 EV respectively and are ready for use with teleconverters up to a maximum aperture of f/22. They make it possible to track birds in flight or athletes in motion, even in difficult conditions. Both cameras feature Touch & Drag AF, while the EOS R7 offers a combination dial and AF multi-controller (joystick) for the first time in the EOS R System.

The Canon EOS R10 and EOS R7 feature the fastest mechanical shutter of any APS-C EOS camera at 15 fps and an electronic shutter at 30 and 23 fps respectively. The EOS R7 offers a maximum mechanical shutter speed of 1/8,000 seconds and an electronic shutter speed of a maximum of 1/16,000 seconds to freeze fast-moving subjects in motion.

The new Canon cameras are equipped with the latest DIGIC X processor and impress with a high reaction speed in image processing. The additional RAW burst mode records up to 30 RAW frames per second. This series of images is saved as a file from which individual images can be extracted during post-processing as required. If the PreRec function is activated, the camera also already records

Canon R7 Key Features

  • 32.5-megapixel APS-C sensor
  • Continuous shooting: 15 fps with a mechanical shutter, 30 fps with an electronic shutter
  • Deep learning and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
  • 4K-UHD@60p and 4K-UHD@30p video by oversampling the 7K sensor data
  • Up to 8 levels of compensation with in-camera image stabilization (IBIS)

Canon R10 Key Features

  • 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor
  • Continuous shooting: 15 fps with a mechanical shutter, 23 fps with an electronic shutter
  • Deep learning and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
  • 4K-UHD@60p (crop) and 4K-UHD@30p video by oversampling the 6K sensor data
  • Movie Digital IS
  • Capture high-quality images even when in motion

The EOS R7’s in-camera IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilizer) is perfect for shooting on-the-move or handheld exposures lasting seconds. As with the EOS R6, EOS R5, and EOS R3, it offers the world’s highest compensation for image stabilization with up to 8 exposure stops. For the first time on EOS cameras, the IS system is used to level the horizon when the Auto Level feature is activated. A new panorama mode is also available, which uses the camera’s internal IS to compensate for camera shake when panning.

The newly developed 32.5 and 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensors of the EOS R7 and EOS R10 offer a longer range and deliver sharp images even from a distance – ideal for sports and wildlife photography, where the action is closer want to fetch. Dual Pixel RAW as well as HEIF, Compact RAW, and HDR modes open up new freedoms in post-processing and enable better reproduction of color tones. The Digital Lens Optimizer automatically delivers the best in-camera JPEGs and corrects aberrations without loss of recording performance.

Weighing just 612g and 429g (with battery and card) respectively, the EOS R7 and EOS R10 represent a powerful upgrade while being more compact and lighter than a comparable DSLR lens combo. The handy EOS R7 is extremely robust, and weatherproof and therefore, is suitable for recordings under difficult conditions.

To meet the growing need to capture both video and stills, the EOS R7 and EOS R10 can record 4K UHD @60p or 4K @30p video oversampled from the 7K or 6K sensor data, respectively to get the best possible picture quality. These can be output in HDR PQ (YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit) in-camera or via HDMI. The EOS R7 has an additional 4K 60p crop mode to increase the range even further. The EOS R7 can record up to six hours and the EOS R10 up to two hours in 4K 60p.

Both models support recording in HDR PQ (YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit BT.2020) with a high dynamic range and minimal grading. For those who want to go one step further, the EOS R7 is the first APS-C EOS to support Canon Log 3 and Cinema Gamut, allowing for a more flexible editing process. Both cameras support portrait mode movie recording and technologies for optical image stabilization. The EOS R7 can combine IBIS with optical, and Movie Digital IS for unparalleled stabilization. The EOS R10 uses the data from optical IS lenses to maximize the effect of Movie Digital IS.

Canon R7 price and availability

The Canon EOS R7 camera will be available individually (body only) and as a kit from the end of June 2022. It is now available to pre-order on Bhphotovideo.com at $1,499 for body only.

Canon R10 price and availability

The Canon EOS R10 will follow individually and in two kit variants a little later and should be available from July 2022. It is also listed on the Bhphotovideo.com store for pre-order and is priced at $979 for body only.

In line with these new mirrorless cameras, Canon has also introduced two first lenses that only cover the smaller sensor area, which is indicated by an additional “S” in the name. So while full-frame lens names start with “RF”, APS-C lenses are labeled “RF-S”.

canon r7, canon r10, Canon RF-S 18-45mm f4.5-6.3, RF-S 18-150mm f3.5-5.6,

The new lenses are the RF-S 18-45mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM with a maximum aperture of 1:4.5-6.3 as a very compact zoom lens for everyday tasks and the RF-S 18-150mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM with a maximum aperture of 1:3.5-6.3 as a versatile lens with a large zoom range that also covers other telephoto focal lengths. The large zoom is also part of two camera lens kits. It is offered as a kit with both the EOS R7 and EOS R10, while the small zoom is only available as a kit with the EOS R10.

The two new zooms with an “RF-S” expand the RF lens series, which currently includes a total of 26 lenses from 5.2mm to 1200mm. With their focal length ranges and optical IS (image stabilizer), they are perfect for landscape and portrait photography as well as vlogging.

The RF-S 18-45mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM is the ideal multi-purpose lens for everyday tasks, and thanks to its compact and retractable design it is easy to store with all these features, it is perfect for on the go. The RF-S 18-45mm IS STM weighs only 130 grams, and the RF-S 18-150mm IS STM only weighs 310 grams.
