Canon unveils EOS R5 C full-frame camera with support for unlimited 8K recording at 60 fps

Canon has introduced one of the most exciting hybrid best mirrorless cameras to date, because the EOS R5 C is a full-fledged cinema camera with a 45-megapixel full-frame sensor that, thanks to massive cooling, can record 8K videos at up to 60 frames per second in unlimited length.

The regular Canon EOS R5 has been available since July 2020, and Canon has now introduced a new cinema version that uses a similar design and the same 45-megapixel full-frame sensor as the older EOS R5.

The Canon EOS R5 C also gets a massive cooling system with an active fan, which should make it possible to record videos of unlimited length without the camera overheating. Also new is the ability to record 8K videos at 60 frames per second, and 4K videos can be recorded at a maximum of 120 fps at 10-bit 4:2:2. According to Canon, the clips recorded in Canon Log 3 have a dynamic range of 14 stops. HDR videos can be recorded in Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG).

The full frame mirrorless camera can output ProRes RAW directly via HDMI to save a video to an external recorder. Audio can be saved as a WAV file independently of the video, making external audio recorders unnecessary in many situations. In contrast to the older EOS R5, the Cinema version does not offer a stabilized sensor, so recordings can only be stabilized electronically.

When switching on, the user has the choice between “photo” and “video” – depending on what the user decides, the menu and the function of the buttons change fundamentally. The camera can record up to 12 photos per second with the mechanical shutter or 20 photos per second with the electronic shutter. Data can be transmitted wirelessly to a smartphone via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Price and Availability

The Canon EOS R5 C is expected to be available from the end of March 2022 for a suggested retail price of $4,499. The new hybrid canon mirrorless camera can be pre-ordered through the Bhphotovideo.com, and Adorama.com websites.
