With the SR35, Astell & Kern has introduced the latest model in the A&norma series, which is cheap by A&K standards. Like its predecessor, the music player relies on a somewhat curious design, in which the 3.6-inch 720p touchscreen sits at an angle in the housing, a large rotary control on the right controls the volume, and buttons on the left are responsible for controlling playback.

The firmware of Astell & Kern music players is usually based on Android. The manufacturer does not specify which Android version is used, but the user interface has been fundamentally revised to make it easier to find and play music. While users cannot download apps from Google Play, the player supports major streaming services including Tidal, Spotify, and Amazon Music, streaming over Wi-Fi 5.

Music can be stored either on the player’s 64 GB flash memory or on a microSD memory card. The 3,150 mAh battery promises a runtime of 20 hours of music playback, and a full charge via USB-C takes around 2.5 hours. The SR35 supports Bluetooth 5.0 including Qualcomm aptX HD and Sony LDAC.

Interestingly, music can be streamed from the smartphone to the SR35 via Bluetooth. Headphones can also be connected via a 3.5mm port or a balanced 2.5mm or 4.4mm connector. In this case, the A&norma SR35 promises even better sound, thanks to Ciruss Logic CS43198 quad DAC and a new amplifier.
