Ricoh Imaging is expanding the “Star series” with the high-speed HD PENTAX-D FA* 85mm F1.4 ED SDM AW Telephoto Lens. Pentax emphasizes that this “star series” with the golden ring is their premium line, which is designed for high-quality workmanship and the highest optical performance.

The 85mm focal length with a light intensity f/1.4 maximum aperture has a long tradition in the Pentax system. These telephoto lenses were already represented in the range in analog photography, with and without autofocus. It is particularly suitable as a moderate telephoto focal length for portraits and special applications. The F1.4 maximum aperture is an important requirement not only for portraits with effectively defocused background and associated bokeh but also for many other applications.

The HD PENTAX-D FA* 85mm F1.4 ED SDM AW has three Super ED extra-low dispersion elements and one glass-molded aspherical element help to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize a high degree of sharpness, improve clarity, color accuracy, and sharpness.

The Pentax lens is equipped with a high-quality, multi-layer HD coating (High Definition), which reduces the average reflectivity in the visible radiation spectrum to less than 50% compared to conventional multi-layer coatings, which means that it is effective even in demanding lighting conditions such as backlighting, stray light, and ghosting be reduced to a minimum. In addition, the front lens has an SP coating (Super Protect), which reduces dirt and moisture and splashing water or greasy substances.

The conventional Pentax Ring-type Supersonic Direct-drive Motor (SDM) is small and therefore develops a rather low torque, which has to be reinforced with additional gears. Because the heavy focus unit of the HD PENTAX-D FA* 85mm F1.4 ED SDM AW has more optical elements than other lenses, a larger ring-shaped autofocus motor with SDM was specially developed for this lens. This generates a stronger torque, which corresponds approximately to 1.3 times the torque of the units installed in the lens.

The AW (All Weather) construction with eight special sealing rings prevents the ingress of moisture and dust into the interior of the lens. And rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
