ThinkPad E16 G2: Lenovo updates its budget laptop with Intel Ultra Core processors

The ThinkPad E series may be the last of the ThinkPad line, but that doesn’t make them bad notebooks. For the new ThinkPad E16 G2, Lenovo returns to fully upgradeable RAM with two SO-DIMM slots.

In the ThinkPad series, the ThinkPad E is the runt of the litter. The original name of this series is ThinkPad Edge, and for a long time, it had a poorer build quality compared to more expensive ThinkPad models. However, recent releases have improved this quality. Additionally, the E Series lacks all the features needed to meet the needs of large businesses, such as WWAN, which relegates it to the small business category.

That said, for many users, the E Series is a good entry into the world of ThinkPads, and it offers one of the few affordable options for a TrackPoint-equipped laptop.

Lenovo recently launched the new ThinkPad E16 G2. The new addition to the lineup is not a revolutionary update, as Lenovo keeps the design of the previous ThinkPad E16 G1 intact. The new Intel versions adopt the Intel Core Ultra with the Core Ultra 7 155H as the fastest version. There will also be AMD models, but they are not public yet.

Unlike previous models, the new ThinkPad E16 2024 features DDR5 memory. A bigger change than upgrading the memory type is that the developers of E16 G1 have stopped partially soldering the memory. Now, there are two SO-DIMM slots in E16 G1, allowing for a full upgrade up to 64 GB of memory. Lenovo continues its trend of returning to modular memory, starting with this year’s ThinkPad T series. In addition, the E series benefits from the new Windows co-piloting key.
