Information on the new range of Sony 4K Projectors has been leaked online ahead of its official launch at IFA 2018. Upcoming models are Sony VPL-VW270ES, VPL-VW570ES, and VPL-VW870ES. These products will replace the current projectors available on the market: VPL-VW260ES, VPL-VW360ES / VPL-VW550ES, and VPL-VW760ES.
All newborns are characterized by the use of SXRD technology (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display: reflective) and native 4K resolution. We have a 0.74-inch panel with 4096 x 2160 pixels. The new entry level of the 4K range, VW270ES, uses a 225W UHP lamp and offers 1,500 lumens brightness (referred to the CLO, Color Light Output, which measures the light intensity of all the primary chromatic components.) The duration is estimated at about 6,000 hours of use. The projector is equipped with Reality Creation (increase level of detailing) and TRILUMINOS technology (color processing).
Motionflow, the proprietary technology for managing moving images, is able to operate even on sources with native Ultra HD resolution. As regards the high dynamic range, compatible with HDR is ensured in HDR10 and HLG formats (Hybrid Log-Gamma). The lens is motorized and allows you to control the focus, zoom and lens shift, the ability to translate the image without moving the projector.
The excursion is +85% and -80% vertically, +/- 31% horizontally. The zoom is 2.06x instead. On this model, there are no memories to recall the values of zoom, focus and lens shift (useful for those who want to take advantage of the constant height from 16:9 to 21:9) and the dynamic iris (in fact there is no datum referred to the dynamic contrast). A very welcome news is the presence of two HDMI 2.0ba full band, capable of handling 18 Gbps. VW260 instead used connectors with limited bandwidth. You can then view Ultra HD and HDR sources up to 60Hz and 10-bit. VW270ES will be available in Black and White color options.
VPL-VW570ES looks very similar to the VW270ES. It differs only from the color of the ring surrounding the front optics: on the VW270 it is black while on the VW570 it is gold. On a technical level, we note the presence of the dynamic iris with a contrast ratio of 350,000:1. It also changes the power of the lamp that rises to 280W and allows you to reach 1,800 lumens. The rest of the features are shared with VW270ES. Here we also find the Black and White color options.
The VPL-VW870ES is a flagship device among all, equipped with the Z-Phosphor technology, then a laser light source. Sony declares a 2,200 lumens brightness, higher than the 2,000 lumens of the VW860ES. The duration does not change, however, estimated at around 20,000 hours. There is the ARC-F lens, which stands for All Range Crisp Focus. This element was present on Sony’s first native 4K projector for home cinema, the VPL-VW1000ES.
The fans will remember it for his excellent performances in this field. ARC-F consists of 18 elements with six extra-low dispersion elements (ELD). Sony ensures that the lens is able to ensure optimal convergence of red, green and blue even in the more peripheral areas of the screen. In addition, digital processing has been added to achieve optimal focusing. Digital Focus Optimizer compensates for the possible degradation of the optic by correcting the projected image.
VW870ES can dynamically control the intensity of the Laser light source, in order to optimize the flow for dark and bright scenes. Added to this is the presence of the dynamic iris. The rest of the specifications are in common with the VW570ES model, with the exception of the lens-shift which has a slightly different excursion (+/- 80% vertically and +/- 31% horizontally). The projector is available in Black color only.
Pricing and availability of these new Sony Projectors will be announced at IFA 2018.
