There is no official release date for Essential Phone yet, but something is beginning to move: BestBuy website has come up with the expected Essential Phone PH-1, a smartphone announced by Andy Rubin at the end of May which designed to “simplify technology through an open ecosystem, made of valuable materials and capable of lasting over time”.

Essential Products, the smartphone startup founded by a co-creator of the Android mobile operating system, has raised $300 million in new funding and signed up retailers to sell its first device, including Best Buy, and carriers Sprint in US and Telus in Canada.

The fact that it has been listed on the BestBuy site with the word “Coming Soon” along with the “Notify Me” notification tab which can be considered a good sign, a confirmation of its imminent marketing. The $699.99 phone, with a titanium and ceramic case, will compete directly against new devices from Samsung and Apple this holiday season.

The Essential Phone offers top of the line specifications, looks beautiful with respect to design and comes in four color options: Black Moon, Stellar Grey, Pure White, and Ocean Depths.

The Essential Phone boasts of a futuristic aesthetic with an almost edge to edge display, a dual camera setup, and a fingerprint sensor placed at the back, and no signs of a visible logo. The display is worth noting as it is edge-to-edge, with only a thin bottom bezel. The flushed camera design keeps the phone free of any unsightly bumps, and there are two magnetic pins at the back for modular attachments as well. The metal edges house the volume buttons and power button on the right side of the smartphone.

The Essential Phone is made of titanium and ceramic which the company claims gives it the highest durability score compared to any other smartphone out there. There’s also a pair of magnetic back pins for a modular accessory system that will “keep your phone cord-free, future-proof, and always up-to-date.” The pins will act as a click cordless connector that will hook up to Essential’s two modular accessories such as 360-degree camera and Essential Phone Dock. There’s no 3.5mm audio jack on the Essential Phone, it ships with a USB Type-C adapter.
