Apple has begun selling the highly anticipated upscale Mac Pro. The high-performance Apple Mac Pro was announced back in June, and in November Apple confirmed that the new product will appear in December.
The Apple Mac Pro 2019 is an ultimate workstation which has impressed us with its design and build quality compared to the previous generation Mac Pro.
In the top-end configuration, it offers a 28-core Intel Xeon CPU, 1.5 TB of RAM in the form of 12 modules (six channels), a couple of 4 TB SSDs and two Radeon Pro Vega II Duo graphics accelerators, each of which includes two Vega GPUs. Simply put, this is similar to the four regular Radeon Pro Vega II graphics cards.
Thanks to this configuration, the Mac Pro is able to work simultaneously with three video streams in 8K resolution or with 12 streams in 4K resolution.
In the basic version, the workstation is equipped with an eight-core Xeon W CPU with a frequency of up to 4 GHz, 32GB of RAM and a Radeon Pro 580X graphics card. The power supply is 1.4 kW.
But the new Mac Pro, as already mentioned, is similar to a regular PC in that its configuration can be changed by itself after purchase. Therefore, not only specific CPUs and GPUs are important, but also the ability to upgrade. The PC received eight PCIe expansion slots. Moreover, they are placed unevenly.
Apple Mac Pro can be equipped with two dual-processor graphics cards, which Apple called MPX Module. Each of these adapters occupies four expansion slots! Therefore, the version with two such monsters will have four lower PCIe slots occupied.
Like the previous Mac Pro, the new one received not the most conventional cooling system. It is not so unique, but the bottom line is that both the video cards and the processor received passive coolers, and a common system, including several fans, is engaged in blowing.
One of the cards for Mac Pro should be highlighted separately. It is an Ultimate Photo Workstation and Digital Darkroom, perhaps your photo workflow involves a Lightroom library that is tens of terabytes in size and spans multiple RAID arrays, or you’re working with large raw files from the cameras such as the Sony a7R IV or Fujifilm GFX 100. Maybe you’re digitizing 35mm or 120 roll film, or large-format sheet film with an optical resolution of 8000 dpi, and then importing these files into Photoshop to apply filters and other effects. To top things off, you use two, three, or four displays simultaneously.
