Sigma 20mm F2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E and Leica L

Sigma USA introduced the Sigma 20mm f2 DG DN Contemporary lens for mirrorless 35mm full-frame cameras. The lens comes with Sony E-mount and an L-mount for corresponding cameras from Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma.

Sigma 20mm f2 lens

The new lens belongs to the new “I” series, which includes “Premium Compact Primes” or in other words, high-quality compact fixed focal lengths for mirrorless system cameras. In 2019 the I series was launched with a 45mm F2.8 lens.

The compact premium ultra-wide-angle lens for mirrorless full-frame systems, developed from scratch, is the latest addition to Sigma’s I series, combining the large initial aperture of f/2.0, the short focal length of 20mm, and particularly high image quality.

The lens is only 72.4mm in length. With its compact shape and low weight of only 370g, it can become the photographer’s constant companion. It is just as ideal for landscape shots as it is for interior photography. The lens also makes edge-sharp images of the starry sky possible.

As the fourth lens in the I-Series, Sigma 20mm f2 DG DN joins the already existing focal lengths of 24mm, 35mm, and 65mm, in which combination it is a well-graded lens set for users of the L-mount from Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma as well as the E -Mount forms by Sony.

Remarkably, the size and weight of the lens, despite the larger angle of view, Contemporary lens almost exactly those of the very compact Sigma 24mm f2.0 from the I-Series. The elegant all-metal design with the magnetic lens cover characteristic of the I-Series, the aperture ring, and the special manufacturing quality makes handling an experience.

Even with an open aperture, the lens Contemporary achieves a high imaging performance from the center to the edge at F2. Based on the most advanced technology in lens construction, the construction contains three high-precision, blank-pressed aspheres, and one SLD and one FLD lens each to correct aberrations. The result is sharp and high-contrast photos right into the corners of the picture. Because the lens developers also focused on reducing the sagittal coma, which can hardly be corrected later in image processing, a precise image of very bright points of light was achieved. This results in excellent sharpness throughout the image field and is particularly useful for photos of the night sky.

In addition to the optical construction of the lens, a super multi-layer coating or nano-porous coating (NPC) of the lenses ensures minimal flare and minimal ghosting, even when strong light sources shine in the direction of the camera. That makes it easier to photograph backlit subjects and get high-contrast shots with the desired punch.
