Canon EOS R50 with 24.2MP APS-C sensor and DIGIC X image processor

Canon has announced the EOS R50, a compact and lightweight camera that effectively replaces the EOS M50 II and marks the series’ final switch to the RF mount.

The Canon R50 is equipped with a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, inherits the advanced object detection technology used in the Canon R6 Mark II and the new Canon R8, and uses the newer DIGIC X processor. New AI-based object recognition gives the R50 impressive autofocus capabilities.

The R50 has an OLED viewfinder with a resolution of 2.36 million dots and a magnification of 0.96x. The LCD screen is a 1.62 million dot color TFT liquid crystal display with touch control capability.

The R50 does not have a fully mechanical shutter. Instead, the camera comes with an electronic front curtain shutter and an electronic shutter. The R50 also lacks built-in image stabilization, so it will depend on optics with optical image stabilization to reduce judder.

The R50 can record in JPEG and HEIF formats in addition to RAW and C-RAW. The camera has a maximum burst speed with a shutter speed of 15 frames per second.

The R50 can connect to smartphones wirelessly or via a USB transfer cable. WiFi is the old standard 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.2 LE.

The R50 can record uncut 4K video at 30p from oversampled 6K footage, and can also shoot Full HD video at 60p at 120fps high frame rate (no audio). It is capable of continuous recording for up to an hour and does not have the 30-minute recording limit of previous cameras.

The camera can also connect via UVC/UAC to computers as a zero-configuration webcam and streaming camera. The battery used is LP-E17, charging and power are possible from the USB Type-C connector.

The Canon EOS R50 activates the new creative mode by turning the mode dial to the A+ position. Like most automatic modes, A+ modes let you make decisions about settings with the camera. Two additional creative settings are unlocked when the camera is in A+ mode.

The dimensions of the camera are approximately 116.3 x 85.5 x 68.8 mm. The black model weighs about 375g (including battery and SD) or about 328g (camera only). The white version is about 376g (including battery and SD) and about 329g without optics.

The Canon EOS R50 can be pre-ordered via Bhphotovideo.com and Adorama.com at $679 for the body only in Black and White color options. Combined with the RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM and RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM lenses, it will be available for $1,029.
