Canon EOS R8 with 24.2MP CMOS Sensor in Compact Body

Canon has announced the EOS R8 full-frame mirrorless camera, which the company says is aimed at amateur photographers and videographers. It features the same 24-megapixel sensor as the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, as well as the same Dual Pixel autofocus system, DIGIC X processor, and AI-based object recognition. While much has remained the same, the R8 is lighter and more compact and has made some concessions to keep the cost down.

The camera shoots six frames per second (FPS) but can reach 40 FPS with a fully electronic shutter. The Canon R8 does not have a mechanical shutter, and the camera also lacks built-in image stabilization, so lenses with image stabilization must be used to reduce vibration.

The camera weighs just 461 grams with the battery, SD card, and without the battery cover. Its dimensions are 132.5 x 86.1 x 70.0 mm. Externally, the R8 is similar to the R6 Mark II, although it lacks the joystick and image evaluation buttons on the back of the camera.

The R8 uses a smaller Canon battery, just like the new EOS R50.

The update can be found on the Canon R8 hotshoe as it, like the R6 II, is a newer digital style that allows the R8 to work with some direct-attach microphones, eliminating the need for an external cable.

Under the waterproof covers, the R8 has a microphone and headphone jack, a Micro HDMI port, and a USB port for charging and UVC/UVA internet streaming.

The 3.0-inch flip-out LCD touchscreen has a resolution of 1.62 million dots. The screen can be used for AF point selection, Touch AF, menu selection, quick controls, zoom, and more.

The Canon R8 has a new auto-shooting mode activated by turning the mode dial to A+. This mode provides advanced shooting assistance and opens up several creative modes.

The camera has a micro-HDMI port that can output pure HDMI up to 4K 60p. Inside, the R8 can record 4K UHD at 60fps for up to 30 minutes. It can also shoot uncut footage in 4K UHD 30p and Fully HD 30p for up to two hours, and in Full HD at 180p, 150p for 20 minutes, and 120/100p for 30 minutes. The R8 can record in C-Log 3 and 4:2:2 H.265 HEVC. The EOS R8 also offers vertical video metadata, video self-timer, and noise reduction.
