Garmin launches two new GPS cycling computers with Solar and e-bike compatibility

Garmin has introduced two new best cycling GPS units. The two models Garmin Edge 540 and Garmin Edge 840 are also available in a Solar version and can also be used in combination with e-bikes.

Garmin is not only known for its smartwatches but also offers the best Garmin Edge for cycling in addition to GPS handheld devices. With the two models Edge 540 and Edge 840, the manufacturer is now expanding its range with two new best cycling GPS units.

The two best cycling GPS units do not differ as much as the large difference in the version number might suggest. The main difference: The Garmin Edge 840 is equipped with a touchscreen, while the Edge 540 customers have to be satisfied with button operation.

Both best cycling GPS units are also available in a solar version. Solar charging should result in a battery life of up to 32 hours with intensive use, and the solar models should last up to 60 hours in energy-saving mode.

The screen measures 2.6 inches and has a resolution of 246 x 322 pixels. It is a color display, which should allow a particularly easy navigation and map view. A Garmin bike map is preinstalled, and the internal memory is a generous 32 GB – on the Garmin Edge 840. On the Garmin Edge 540, the built-in memory is only half as large.

In addition to GPS, the GNSS module also supports Glonass and Galileo. A barometric altimeter, a magnetometer, a gyroscope, and an acceleration sensor are installed as well as an ambient light sensor. Bluetooth, ANT+, and WiFi are supported, and Garmin IQ apps should be installable.

Notifications can also be displayed and compatibility with e-bikes should be there, and the new bike computers also support the Varia radar systems and lights.

The bike computers should not only be used for routing, but also training, so the cycling ability and thus the performance can be compared. Recommendations for the use of force are provided via Power Guide – based on an imported route and its elevation profile.
