Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Di III VXD G2 introduced for Nikon Z Mount

Tamron has introduced a new version of their popular 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 lens for Nikon Z system mirrorless cameras. This lens was previously exclusive to Sony E-mount cameras.

The Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2 Nikon Z lens is the fourth lens released by Tamron for the Nikon Z system. Additionally, it joins the 35–150mm f/2–2.8 Di III VXD, 70–300mm f/4.5–6.3 Di III RXD, and 150–500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD lenses.

This lens excels at close-up shots, with a minimum focus distance of 0.18 meters and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7.

The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 lens has 17 elements in 15 groups. In addition, it includes two low dispersion (LD) elements and an aspherical GM glass element to effectively control optical aberrations. On the other hand, the NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8 lens, which is based on the first-gen Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 zoom lens, has 15 elements in 12 groups.

The Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2 Nikon Z version supports hybrid autofocus and eye autofocus, and it includes an M/A switch and in-camera lens correction for shading, chromatic aberration, and distortion.

The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 lens measures 119.8mm in length and weighs 550g. The NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8 lens is slightly longer at 120.5mm and slightly heavier at 565g. Both lenses have a 67mm filter thread diameter.

With the 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 lens now available, Nikon Z owners have three standard f/2.8 zoom lenses to choose from: NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8, NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S, and the new Tamron Z 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 lens.

Price and release date

Pre-order Tamron’s new 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 lens now on Bhphotovideo.com and Adorama.com. Available starting April 18th. The Z-mount version is priced at $999, slightly higher than the Sony camera version that currently sells for $799.

While it will take time to determine if the Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8 lens is as good as its E-mount counterpart, there is no reason to expect otherwise. If it proves to be equally impressive, it will be the top choice for an affordable standard f/2.8 zoom lens for Nikon Z cameras.
