Sony Electronics has unveiled its latest offering, the ILX-LR1, an interchangeable lens camera sporting a 61MP full-frame image sensor, reportedly the same sensor found in the latest Sony A7CR model. This compact and lightweight Sony industrial camera is tailored for a range of applications, including inspections, investigations, surveys, and drone mapping.
The ILX-LR1 from Sony is engineered to capture images with remarkable resolution, minimal noise, and an expansive dynamic range. It offers industrial camera solutions, featuring a continuous shooting mode capable of 3 frames per second—an ideal choice for cartographic surveys and expedited high-altitude photography.
To enhance its versatility, the ILX-LR1 boasts compatibility with a wide array of E-mount lenses, affording users the flexibility to select the perfect lens for their specific project. Additionally, this new Sony industrial camera supports 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second.
Measuring approximately 10 cm in width, 7.3 cm in height, and around 4.2 cm in depth, the camera is remarkably compact and lightweight, tipping the scales at just about 240 g. However, it’s important to note that this camera lacks an electronic viewfinder, LCD monitor, and battery—stripped down to its essential components to cater specifically to industrial use.
One notable absence is optical image stabilization, a deliberate omission by the manufacturer aimed at reducing the camera’s overall size and weight. It’s worth mentioning that drones are typically equipped with stabilizing gimbals designed to compensate for this deficiency.
Due to its compact dimensions and robust functionality, the ILX-LR1 finds applications across a spectrum of job sites and industries, including utilities, clean energy, telecommunications, transportation, construction, and land management.
The camera’s design includes M3 screw holes for secure mounting on any of its six sides, allowing attachment to drones, industrial vehicles, robots, and underwater vehicles with ease. On the camera’s rear, you’ll find convenient USB Type-C and HDMI Micro (Type D) connectors, along with a memory card slot. The camera also features physical buttons and controls for tactile operation.
Powering the ILX-LR1 is a breeze, as it supports 10-18V DC power and can be conveniently powered by aircraft batteries.
