Commercial network storage from QNAP or Synology, for example, offers customers significant advantages, as the Hot swappable NAS enclosure models are usually already equipped with an easy-to-use operating system. Building your network storage device, on the other hand, offers the possibility of realizing your own NAS according to your ideas.

The CS351 from the manufacturer SilverStone is an even more compact case for such projects. Specifically, the NAS enclosure measures 265 x 411 millimeters and is 209 millimeters high. The installation of a mainboard in Micro-ATX, Mini-DTX, or Mini-ITX form factor is planned. Quite advantageous: A standard power supply unit can be used, although this should ideally not be longer than 150 millimeters.

A CPU cooler with a height of up to 82 millimeters can be installed, and the length of expansion cards – such as network cards – is limited to 160 millimeters. Long expansion cards can hinder the installation of additional 2.5-inch drives, a total of four PCI plug-in cards can be installed.

Five 3.5 or 2.5-inch drives are typically accessible and lockable for NAS at the front. These can be connected via SATA with up to 6 GBit/s or SAS with up to 12 GBit/s, whereby the change is possible during operation. Two additional 3.5-inch drives can be installed internally, as well as the option of installing up to seven 2.5-inch drives with a height of 15 millimeters and one 2.5-inch with a height of up to 9.5 millimeters -drives. The use of a RAID is conceivable, whereby SSDs can also be used for caching.

A USB type C port, two USB 3.0 ports, and a combined audio port can be found on the front. A single fan is installed, and three 40 mm fans can be retrofitted on the back and two 80 mm fans in the lid.

SilverStone CS351 price and availability

SilverStone CS351 Hot swappable NAS enclosure costs $333.45 / £175.69 and will be available to buy from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk websites.

Recently, QNAP introduced the TS-233 NAS enclosure for home and office use. The QNAP NAS is designed to build a personal private cloud and home multimedia center with a built-in NPU to boost AI-powered face recognition and is priced at £199.
