RED launches V-RAPTOR 8K VV [X] and V-RAPTOR XL 8K VV [X] Cameras with Global Shutter

RED unveiled its latest offerings, the V-RAPTOR 8K VV [X] and V-RAPTOR XL 8K VV [X] cameras. These new models are similar to their predecessors but boast the addition of a global shutter.

RED V-RAPTOR XL 8K [X]

The V-RAPTOR 8K VV [X] retains the capabilities, recording modes, and frame rates of its predecessor. On the other hand, the V-RAPTOR XL 8K VV [X] incorporates additional features like auxiliary power and mounting options, internal ND filters, a dedicated lens mount system, wireless genlock and timecode, and more video outputs.

Sensor

Both models feature an impressive 8192 x 4320 Global Shutter Full-Frame VV Sensor with a claimed dynamic range of 17+ stops. The global shutter is particularly useful for tracking fast-moving shots and in situations with strobing lights or camera flashes. Additionally, it greatly benefits VFX and virtual production environments by capturing the entire scene simultaneously.

RED’s Global Vision suite of tools utilizes the global shutter sensor and includes features such as Extended Highlights mode. This mode enables the camera to see color and detail in extreme highlights, providing a softer and more subtle highlight roll-off. RED claims that using this mode extends the dynamic range by over 3 stops, resulting in an overall dynamic range of over 20 stops.

Recording Options

Both cameras utilize a single-slot CFexpress Type B card for recording media. The V-RAPTOR XL [X] comes with an interchangeable PL mount, and there is an optional EF mount available. Additionally, it features internal electronic ND filters ranging from 2 to 7 stops. The V-RAPTOR 8K VV [X] includes a default PL lens mount but also includes a PL mount shim pack, an AC power adapter, and an XLR power cable.

The cameras are compatible with a wide range of batteries, including 14 V batteries and high-voltage 26 V V-Lock or Gold Mount options. Furthermore, they offer multiple power output options such as regulated 12V and 24V, Dual D-TAP outputs, multiple voltage outputs, and a Fischer 3-pin 3A output. The video outputs include 3x 12G-SDI, 1x 3G/1.5G-SDI, and a DSMC3 Touch 7″ LCD monitor connector.

The RED Compact EVF is designed as a single cable monitoring device for DSMC3 camera systems, featuring a customizable function button interface and an adjustable diopter range. The Advanced Adapter Plus offers additional power options and is bundled with the V-RAPTOR Tactical Top Plate.

The V-RAPTOR XL [X] weighs 7.99 lbs / 3.62kg, while the V-RAPTOR [X] weighs 4.03 lbs / 1.82kg. Both cameras maintain the small and versatile form factor of the DSMC3 platforms.
