Lenovo is revising its workstation lineup. The Lenovo ThinkPad P17 form the core of the 2020 ThinkPad P series: The new Mobile Workstation laptop is completely redeveloped internally with a stronger cooling system, higher-clocked GPUs, and a modular design with daughter cards instead of a soldered GPU.
The ThinkPad P series is the manufacturer’s workstation series. Simply put, the P-ThinkPads are the most powerful ThinkPad laptops available. Among the P models, the traditional, thicker models like the ThinkPad P53 and ThinkPad P73 are the ones that contain the most powerful components.
There are some major changes coming with the Lenovo P17. Instead of a ThinkPad P54 and ThinkPad P74, there is a ThinkPad P17 with the 17-inch screen, Lenovo is adapting its workstation to the naming scheme of the other ThinkPads. But not only the name is different: According to Lenovo, the workstation has been completely redesigned.
That may not be understandable at first glance, because the P17 look very similar to their predecessors. In fact, it still has the traditional ThinkPad hinge design, and Lenovo isn’t making any major changes to thickness or weight.
Instead of focusing on looks, Lenovo claims to have worked on internal qualities. For example, there should be a larger CPU cooler and wider fan outlets, which should ensure better airflow. In line with this, the NVIDIA Quadro GPUs in the P17 with the most power.
Another focus: a more modular design. To achieve this, Lenovo relies on specially developed daughter cards for the GPUs instead of the soldered solution as before. The new Workstation laptop should offer four times as many CPU / GPU combinations as their predecessors.
There is a choice of Intel Xeon or Core i7 CPUs of the Comet Lake generation. Unlike the predecessors, ThinkPad P17 with AX Wi-Fi. The powerful components are supplemented by up to 128 GB RAM (four SO-DIMM slots) and a 94-watt hour battery.
