The new Irix 30mm f1.4 Dragonfly wide angle lens is based on the already available 30mm cine model. The optical structure is identical in both versions. The manually focusable lenses differ in their bayonet mounts, but not in their optical properties.
The Irix lens consists of 13 elements in 11 groups with 3 glass elements with extremely low dispersion, 2 glass elements with high refraction, and an aspherical lens. Irix mentions an extremely low distortion of 0.95 percent and emphasizes the softness and the cine look of the picture. The lens is designed for use with 35mm full-frame sensors. The lens is made of a new diaphragm with 11 blades and rounded edges, which should ensure a pleasant and very lively background blur. The aperture can be adjusted in the range from f/1.4 to f/16.
The lens housing corresponds to the Dragonfly design, which is already known from the Irix models with focal lengths of 45 mm and 150 mm. The most important properties are an inner structure reinforced with metal elements, a scratch-resistant lens surface, a non-slip focusing ring with a special embossing through which the position of the ring can be easily felt, engraved markings filled with a UV-reactive paint, and seals to protect against dust and water. The internal focusing ensures that the lens does not change in length when focusing.
The “Focus Lock” function enables the focusing ring to be locked in a certain position. This is particularly useful if you want to keep a fixed distance to the object being photographed or if you want to keep the sharpness at infinity in landscape or astrophotography. The aperture is controlled by the camera, the focus confirmation of the camera makes it easier to focus. The lens is compatible with PASM semi-automatic modes, the exposure parameters are completely transferred in EXIF format.
