Introducing Synology’s New Budget NAS HDD: The Synology Plus Series

Synology is broadening its selection of budget NAS HDD models with the introduction of the Synology Plus Series. The company aims to provide users with compact network storage devices equipped with suitable hard drives.

Budget NAS HDD Synology Plus Series

While Synology is expanding its new NAS storage HDD, it is important to note that the company is not manufacturing hard drives themselves. Instead, they source the hard drives from external suppliers. Previously, Synology-branded hard drives were supplied by Toshiba, but Synology made firmware adjustments to optimize their performance.

In a press release, Synology highlights the benefits for customers, emphasizing the convenience of having a single point of contact in case of defects or issues with the Synology NAS. Additionally, firmware updates are seamless, allowing users to update the hard drive’s firmware directly within the NAS without the need for removal.

The hard drives in the Synology Plus Series are CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) disks, which differ from SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) disks as they do not write data in an overlapping manner. This eliminates the need for CMR hard drives to rewrite data tracks in certain situations. Synology promotes these CMR drives for their improved speed, reliability, and service life.

The Synology Plus Series budget NAS HDD models come in four variants, offering storage capacities ranging from 4 to 12 TB. The 12 TB model features helium-filled technology and operates at 7,200 revolutions per minute, providing a higher data transfer rate of up to 240 MB/s compared to the standard 202 MB/s. The estimated Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) for these drives is 1,000,000 hours. They are 3.5-inch hard drives that connect via SATA.

Synology Plus Series price and release date

The NAS storage HDD drives in the Synology Plus Series are priced at just under $89.99 / £102.42 for the 4 TB variant on Bhphotovideo.com and Amazon.co.uk. The 6 TB version is priced at $149.99, the 8 TB version at $189.99, and the helium-filled 12 TB variant at $249.99.

In addition to the new HDDs, Synology recently launched the DS423, a budget-friendly 4-Bay NAS device catering to the needs of individuals and small businesses. Priced at $499.99, this network-attached storage system provides ample storage capacity with four slots and is equipped with two Ethernet ports.
