Sony launches Backbone One PlayStation Edition iPhone Controller

Sony has introduced an officially licensed mobile gaming controller for iPhone, which makes it easy to play PlayStation games remotely while on the go. The design was based on the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller.

Mobile gaming controller for iPhone Backbone PlayStation Edition

Sony has teamed up with gamepad specialist Back bone to offer the Backbone One PlayStation Edition, an officially licensed gamepad for the Apple iPhone. The iPhone controller offers the same button assignment as the regular Backbone One, but both the labeling of the buttons and the color scheme have been adapted to the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller (approx. $70 on Amazon).

The iPhone game controller is primarily advertised for use with PlayStation Remote Play. PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 games can be streamed directly from your home console to your smartphone via Remote Play, as long as both devices have a sufficiently fast internet connection. However, the Gamepad also works with conventional smartphone games that are loaded from the App Store.

The accompanying Backbone app has received several PlayStation features, including a banner promoting Sony’s latest games. The connection to the iPhone is via the Lightning connector, which is intended to minimize latency, while the gamepad does not need its battery and never needs to be charged.

The Backbone One has an additional Lightning connector so that the iPhone can be charged while gaming, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack. It is compatible with the latest iPhones like iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. An adapter is also included for a better experience on the latest devices.

Mobile gaming controller for iPhone price and availability

The Backbone One PlayStation Edition iPhone Controller is available now from the website at $99.99. The PlayStation version is not currently offered for Android smartphones, but the almost identical variant without PlayStation branding is also available for Android devices for the same price.
