Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 with 13th Gen Intel and AMD Ryzen 7030 series Processors

The Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 introduces an intriguing element to its arsenal—a new 16:10 display boasting an impressive 2.5K resolution. Powering this business laptop is AMD Barcelo-R, which marks the second refresh of the Zen 3 CPUs, alongside the formidable Intel Raptor Lake. However, those who relish extended keystrokes must be prepared for a slight regression.

Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5

This latest iteration of the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 features a sleek 16:10 display with a compact length of just 313 mm. The slim screen bezels contribute to an enhanced screen-to-body ratio, now standing at an impressive 90 percent. Opting for the smaller battery choices (47 Wh and 57 Wh) results in a weight reduction, which now commences at 1.53 kg instead of 1.59 kg. Additionally, the length has been trimmed down to 356 mm, compared to the previous 365 mm. The laptop is available in two elegant shades: Thunder Black and Arctic Gray.

At the core of this ThinkPad laptop lies the formidable 13th Gen Intel Raptor Lake and AMD Barcelo-R, representing the second iteration of the original Zen 3 CPUs. These are likely to be the AMD Ryzen 7 7730U, Ryzen 5 7530U, and Ryzen 3 7330U, all boasting clock speeds up to 200 MHz higher than their predecessors. The graphics units include RX Vega 6, Vega 7, and Vega 8, rather than the RDNA 2 or RDNA 3 GPUs. However, an optional Nvidia GeForce MX550 with 4 GB is available for the Intel version.

Gone are the TN panels, with all IPS displays now offering a base brightness of 300 cd/m². Although a 100% sRGB option seems probable, it has yet to be officially confirmed. The DDR4 RAM, partially soldered, can be upgraded to a maximum of 40 GB in one slot. Furthermore, the presence of an M.2 2242 slot for PCIe 3.0 SSDs and an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 slot ensures ample storage capacity.

Regrettably, the keyboard with a 1.8 mm keystroke has been replaced with the same keyboard featured in the T series, which offers a 1.5 mm keystroke and flat trackpoint keys. On the connectivity front, users can look forward to the inclusion of a second USB-C port and HDMI 2.0b, a welcome upgrade from the previous HDMI 1.4b. Thunderbolt 4 is available on the Intel ThinkPad E series laptops, although the AMD models do not offer USB 4. The retention of the GBit LAN port is a pleasing aspect, and users can opt for either WiFi 6 or WiFi 6E.
