Synology DS124 and DS224+ compact network storage devices for backups, video surveillance, and more

Synology has unveiled two new network storage devices: the Synology DS124 and DS224+. While both models cater to private users and come in compact sizes, they differ significantly in terms of their processor architectures and specific features.

The Synology DS224+ is powered by an Intel Celeron J4125 processor and boasts 2 gigabytes of DDR4 memory, expandable up to 6 gigabytes. On the other hand, the DS124 utilizes an ARM-based computing chip with the Realtek RTD1619B featuring four computing cores. However, the DS124 only offers a tight 1GB main memory, which unfortunately cannot be expanded.

The DS224+ can accommodate up to two hard drives or SSDs, supporting both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch formats. In contrast, the DS124 can only hold a single drive, ruling out the possibility of implementing RAID systems or replacing individual storage devices during operation.
