Sony Unveils the 70-200mm f4 Macro G OSS II Lens: A Remarkable Addition to Their E-mount Lineup

In addition to the highly anticipated Alpha a6700 camera, Sony has announced the launch of their 50th full-frame E-mount lens, the new 70-200mm f4 Macro G OSS II telephoto zoom lens. This lens serves as an update to the 2014 70-200mm F4 G OSS model, boasting improved autofocus capabilities and a reduction in size and weight, with a 15% decrease compared to its predecessor.

The lens achieves precise focusing through two independently moving focus groups, driven by four high-power XD linear motors (two per group). This design enables the lens to focus remarkably close, achieving a minimum focusing distance of 26cm. Sony proudly claims that the lens focuses 20% faster than the previous Mark 1 version. Additionally, the lens exhibits minimal focus breathing, which can be further reduced by utilizing the breathing compensation feature available on compatible cameras.

Comprising 19 elements arranged in 13 groups, the Sony 70-200mm f4 Macro lens incorporates advanced optical elements, including one aspherical element, three extra-low dispersion elements to combat chromatic aberration, one aspherical extra-low dispersion element, and one conventional aspherical lens.

Furthermore, the lens is fully compatible with Sony’s optional FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters. These teleconverters enable life-size, 1:1 macro photography across the entire zoom range. When used, the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters provide effective focal lengths and apertures of 98-280mm f/5.6 and 140-400mm f/8, respectively.

The Sony FE 70-200mm f4 Macro G OSS II lens is now available for pre-order on Bhphotovideo.com and Adorama.com, with an anticipated release later this month. The lens will be priced at $1,698.99, offering photographers a fantastic addition to their gear collection.
