ROG Falchion RX Review: Bridging the Gap Between Gaming Prowess and Typing Comfort

As the first low profile gaming mechanical keyboard from ASUS to use the ROG Falchion RX Low Profile switch, can this keyboard model make a big splash like the Logitech G913 TKL at the time of launch? Please join me in the ROG Falchion RX review article below.

ROG Falchion RX Review

The ROG Falchion RX Low Profile, ASUS’s first low key mechanical keyboard for gaming, has a low-profile design with rows of equally high buttons. Suitable for both gaming and light office work.

Design

Low profile gaming mechanical keyboards always create a strong visual highlight because of their compactness. ROG Falchion RX Low Profile is only 26.5mm low, instead of 3-4mm high like conventional mechanical keyboards. Beneath the keys, you’ll find a two-level adjustable kickstand that lets you modify the typing angle for optimal wrist comfort, reducing fatigue during prolonged use.

ROG Falchion RX Low Profile has 68 keys and an extremely compact 65% layout. This keyboard layout is highly popular in the market now for its compact design, which maintains full functionality for gaming, text editing, and software use despite the reduced key size. Very thin and compact, this keyboard deserves to be in our backpack every day.

The body of the ROG Falchion RX Low Profile combines high-quality, sturdy gray ABS plastic for the bottom of the case with a glossy silver aluminum alloy for the top case. These two materials give the key a moderate weight of 595g, compact and sturdy. Inside the keypad, there are 2 layers of sound-absorbing foam, so the creaking feeling when typing is completely absent.

The standout feature of the Asus Rog Falchion wireless 68 mechanical gaming keyboard is its top border. This area hosts an LED panel displaying the signature “Republic of Gamers” emblem synonymous with Asus. Diagonal striped LED strips on both sides will continuously change color. The two edges of the border will display the operating status and connection of the key quite nicely.

The top edge of the key is where the connection essence of ROG Falchion RX Low Profile is synthesized. Asus has smartly integrated the power button, Windows/Mac switch, and receiver slot on one side. On the other side, there will be a functional macro button for the key, and a touch-sensitive plastic strip to increase or decrease the volume and change color for the LED.

The bottom of the lower left key holds the required basic product information sticker. The entire surface is stylized with diagonal stripes, and the ROG eye logo is imprinted alternately, creating a unique and premium blurred visual effect.

Not stopping there, this keyboard also has a white plastic bottom cover. All 4 corners have anti-slip rubber feet. In my view, the plastic cover serves a dual purpose: it increases the durability of the keys when the keyboard is in use, and acts as a dust cover when it’s not, effectively reducing dust accumulation and simplifying cleaning. This feature is quite convenient.

Switch and Keycap

ROG RX Low Profile refers to Asus’s two optical switch lines, Red and Blue, used on the keys. One thing to note is that this keyboard does not have the hot-swap switch feature. So, we will stick with one and only one type of switch.

If you are someone who likes smooth, slippery typing, then choose the Red version. If you prefer a keyboard with a more responsive feel and a clicking sound, opt for the Blue version.

Our ROG Falchion RX review unit features a Blue switch with a 55g pressing force and 1.5mm key travel. Each switch will have the ROG logo printed on it. Because this is a high-end optical switch line researched and produced by ROG itself. The switch has a square box shape and, a low height, and the switch body is made of clear plastic, so the LED dissipation effect is very good, very even, and very beautiful.

The Red and Blue switch versions of the ROG Falchion RX Low Profile keyboard have lubricated stems, housings, springs inside the switches, and stabilizers on the Space, Backspace, Enter, and Shift keys. This lubrication makes typing smoother. The keyboard is more compact and offers a smoother typing sound. Its pre-lubricated mechanism is a distinctive feature, as very few mechanical gaming keyboards are designed this way.

ROG Falchion RX Low Profile’s ABS Doubleshot keycap is pure white, penetrates and dissipates LEDs well, and is designed in a low profile, suitable for the switch. Below the keycap will be 4 small plastic pins at the 4 corners to attach to the switch. Note that we cannot replace the keycap because no one designs or markets a keycap set like this today.

Because it is white, the problem of dirt, sweat, and yellowing over time is inevitable. To maintain the cleanliness of the ROG Falchion RX Low Profile, regularly wipe it down with paper tissues.

Technology and features

Today’s trend dictates that manufacturers must equip each mechanical keyboard, whether for gaming or custom use, with 3-mode connection technology. This includes a wired mode, a 2.4Ghz receiver, and Bluetooth 5.0. Our ROG Falchion RX review model is no exception, equipped with three flexible connection modes with wireless connection technology, especially SpeedNova, eliminating all signal obstacles to keep gameplay smooth and responsive.

In particular, ROG Falchion RX Low Profile uses an Omni receiver, a 2.4 GHz receiver with almost zero latency. This receiver can support a wireless Asus ROG mouse simultaneously with other devices. Examples of compatible mice include the Keris II Ace and Impact III Wireless. The convenience of using just one USB receiver for both the keyboard and mouse streamlines connectivity.

At the top edge of the keyboard, there’s a macro button on the left side. You can customize this button for various key modes and operations through ROG’s Armory Crate software. Out of the box, it comes preset to control volume adjustment, media playback, and LED mode customization.

Talking about the sensor feature placed on top is also quite good, but its practicality remains limited. The only feature I use most often is adjusting the volume. Pressing and removing my left hand to swipe the plastic strip above is not very convenient. Personally, I like to place the plastic strip that controls this function on the left and right sides vertically, this creates a more realistic and familiar feeling of increasing or decreasing the volume.

As a mechanical gaming keyboard, of course, all 68 keys of the ROG Falchion RX Low Profile are 100% Anti-Ghosting and come with RGB LEDs on each key that radiate bright light even in office lighting environments. It brings a vibrant, professional gaming look to your desk, whether in a lit room or with the lights off.

To deeply adjust features, function shortcuts, and RGB synchronization with the ASUS ecosystem through Armory Crate software, which is very familiar to red fans. You can sync the RGB effect with your Asus computer or laptop to enhance the set’s beauty. I’m pleased with the software’s easy management and synchronization of the entire ASUS gaming ecosystem.

The SpeedNova and Omni receiver technologies in the ROG Falchion RX stand out in terms of features and technology. These technologies significantly reduce latency during gaming and wireless work.

ROG Falchion RX review test: typing and gaming experience

Honestly, I’m a person who rarely touches keyboards designed in low profile like this. Because if you use typing for a long time, it will cause wrist fatigue. The key travel is quite short, which limits the softness and responsiveness I feel upon pressing. However, the ROG Falchion RX Low Profile has introduced some noticeable differences. Regarding my initial typing experience, I instinctively press Space, Backspace, Shift, and Enter every time I touch a mechanical key. This is to test the performance of the four stabilizers on these keys. I was pleased with the result as it was up to standard—no interference, no excess noise, and very smooth.

ROG Falchion RX Review

I’ve tried low profile mechanical keyboards from brands like Keychron, Lofree, and Razer’s DeathStalker V2 Pro Ultra Slim line. Despite this, I still don’t feel the uniformity in the buttons, particularly their consistency. The stabilizers are the same as the ROG Falchion RX Low Profile.

While typing or composing this ROG Falchion RX review, I experience a noticeable glide with its Low Profile keys. Perhaps it’s because my typing speed is inherently fast, but the compact size of the keys is an important factor in narrowing the distance between my hands and each keypress.

Even though the key travel is only 1.5mm short, I still feel the same smoothness, compactness, and comfort as when typing on the keyboard of the Asus TUF Gaming laptop. I typically use custom mechanical keyboards with switches offering up to 4mm of travel. However, ROG has expertly designed its optical RX Low Profile switches for high-performance gaming and typing, ensuring hand smoothness and comfort.

During gameplay, I notice a minor drawback: all the buttons are the same height. Consequently, this often leads to pressing the wrong button when casting a move, opening the inventory, or activating an action in the game. Low profile gaming mechanical keyboards struggle to overcome this issue, despite employing concave buttons.

Regarding latency when playing games, I feel it is zero in both modes: Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz. I experienced no lag, slow movement, or stalling. However, I found the absence of the function row and the NumPad to be quite inconvenient when playing games that require these keys, typically offline games.

In addition, for popular games like League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, and PUBG, ROG Falchion RX Low Profile is still an effective gaming tool. The short travel of the key provides the advantage of quick key activation and faster signals to launch moves to defeat opponents more accurately.

Overall, ROG Falchion RX Low Profile has given me the feeling of typing and pressing keys when playing games, and working in the office is also nothing to criticize. However, it’s only a little tiring for your hands if you type continuously for a long time.

Final line

Asus has increasingly committed to developing gaming gear, particularly superior mechanical keyboards. The ROG Falchion RX Low Profile stands out with its advanced hardware, software, and typing experience, surpassing other low-profile mechanical keyboards currently available on the market.

Asus has designed this keyboard to be both aesthetically pleasing and compact, making it ideally suited for all users. Office workers who need a compact, unique, and quiet text editing tool for daily use at work. Even a guy or girl gamer needs a sharp, accurate weapon to destroy opponents in the most intense matches.
