Nikon has announced the Nikkor Z 600mm F4 TC VR S, a Z-mount super-telephoto lens with a built-in switchable teleconverter. This lens is the largest Z-mount lens released by Nikon and offers a focal length of 840mm when using the built-in 1.4x teleconverter.
The lens consists of 19 elements (26 if you include a teleconverter), including three extra-low dispersion (ED) elements, two Super ED elements, and two short-wavelength refractive (SR) elements. Nikon uses Nano Crystal Coat and a Meso Amorphous lens coating to minimize ghosting and flare.
Autofocus is controlled by Nikon’s Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor (SSVCM) drive system, which the company claims provides “faster speed, better accuracy, and quieter operation” than previous autofocus systems used in its lenses. The lens’s Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization provides compensation up to five stops (CIPA rated) (5.5 when used with the Nikon Z 9 camera’s sync function). Sports VR mode prioritizes panoramic motion to track objects moving horizontally.
The lens weighs just 3.3kg, which is 550g lighter than its F-mount predecessor (which did not have a built-in teleconverter). Its length is 44 cm without a hood installed. The magnesium alloy lens barrel is weatherproof and designed to bring the center of gravity closer to the mount for better balance. A fluorine coating has also been applied to the front element to better repel dirt, and water and for easier cleaning.
