Leica Summicron-M 28mm f2 ASPH 2023 lens introduced

Leica, alongside the M11-P, has unveiled the latest iteration of the Leica Summicron-M 28mm f2 ASPH, a wide-angle prime lens. This Leica 28mm f2 2023 version incorporates cutting-edge technology derived from the company’s modern sensor, featuring a reduced minimum focusing distance.

Compared to its predecessor, which focused at a minimum distance of 0.7 meters, the new version can focus as close as 0.4 meters when utilizing Live View, the Leica Visoflex 2 viewfinder, or the Leica FOTOS app (without relying on a rangefinder). Although the difference might seem slight, this adjustment alters the maximum magnification ratio from 1:22 to 1:11.3, marking a significant enhancement.

Additionally, the revamped Leica Summicron-M 28 f2 ASPH incorporates a built-in round lens hood, retaining the 46mm filter thread from the previous model. The lens shares similarities in its optical arrangement, comprising nine elements grouped into six, with the inclusion of a single aspherical element.

In terms of physical dimensions, the new Leica 28mm f2 2023 lens closely resembles its predecessor. However, it’s worth noting that the prior version weighed 289g with the optional hood attached, whereas the updated model, with its integrated hood, weighs 275g.

The lens boasts a 10-blade aperture, and an aperture locking ring, and features the distinctive Leica design. Manufactured in Germany, as indicated by the engraving on the body.

Price and release date

Leica Summicron-M 28mm f2 ASPH is available for pre-order on Bhphotovideo.com at $5,295, representing a $200 increase over the previous iteration. The lens is set to hit the market on November 30th.
