Zoom R20 16-track Compact Studio with Touchscreen

With the R20, Zoom is launching a new multitrack recorder. For the first time, Zoom has installed a touchscreen for DAW-like editing in a compact studio. The Zoom R20 is a digital compact studio with 16 tracks, eight of which can be recorded at the same time.

The recording format is 44.1 kHz and 16/24 bit. Two of the eight input channels are equipped with XLR-jack combo sockets; the other six have XLR inputs. Channels 5-8 offer phantom power (switchable for two channels at the same time). Each input channel has a gain control, a button for recording standby, and a fader.

The only other hardware controls are the six transport buttons. Everything else takes place on the 4.3-inch touchscreen, which Zoom is installed in a compact studio for the first time. Here you can cut, copy, move and loop audio recordings like in a DAW. The tracks are color-coded and refer to the colors of the input channels, which improves the overview.

According to Zoom, the R20 contains studio-quality effects, including a 3-band EQ, compressor, limiter, noise gate, and reverb. Also, amp emulations for guitar and bass will be there.

Anyone who likes to use a portastudio to create backing tracks for practice will be happy about the 150 integrated drum loops. There is also 18 synth sounds onboard, which can be controlled via a MIDI keyboard connected via USB-C and edited via a piano roll display.

The Zoom R20 records on SDXC cards with a capacity of up to 1 TB. Next to the card slot, there is a USB-C port for connection to a computer or iOS device. The R20 can also be used as an audio interface. There are eight inputs and four outputs available on Windows and Mac computers. Under iOS, the device works as an interface with two inputs and two outputs.

Another USB port enables the connection of an optional Bluetooth adapter. A wireless connection to a smartphone can be established to control the R20 remotely via the R20 Control App.

Zoom R20 price and availability

The Zoom R20 multitrack recorder can be purchased through the Bhphotovideo.com, Amazon.com, and Adorama.com websites for $399.99.

Earlier this year, the iZotope has introduced the Spire Studio Recorder. It is an 8-track recording studio equipment with good sound properties and intuitive operation, which can be used to record and edit vocals or instruments wirelessly and in combination with a smartphone or tablet.
