Zoom F2 and F2-BT Field Recorder for Podcasters and Travelers

At first, we thought that Zoom had introduced a new radio link with the F2 and the F2-BT. Then we saw the controls and it was clear: They are really quite small, digital field recorder with a lavalier microphone.

When we think of Field Recorder, the first thing that comes to mind is Zoom H8, the new Tascam models, or, if it gets bigger, parts from Sound Devices, Zaxcom, or Fostex. All of them more or less large for professional use – all beyond your doubts.

Depending on the design, they are only transportable to a limited extent, especially if you hike alone in rough terrain or want to be as mobile as possible, as little weight as possible is always the best choice. So the recorder has to be small too – ideally, it can be fit in your pocket for vlogs or other film recordings. Zoom now has a possible solution that is also suitable for podcasting on the go.

The Zoom F2 is hardly larger than a bodypack transmitter, but records in 32 bits (float) and does not have to be leveled. The sample rates available are 44.1 and 48 kHz. Optionally, a low cut at 80 Hz and a rec hold function can be switched on. The internal clock runs with an accuracy of 0.5 ppm, which should be sufficient for synchronization with other sound and image recordings.

The F2-BT is optionally available, which has a Bluetooth interface and can be remotely controlled using the F2 Control app on the smartphone or tablet. Means: start recording and make settings.

Two AAA batteries or rechargeable batteries should allow up to 15 hours of recording time, one hour less with Bluetooth. We don’t have much to do with calculating at the moment, but up to 512 GB SD and SDHC cards should not be full with a mono signal.

Price and availability

The Zoom F2 costs $149.99, and the Zoom F2-BT with Bluetooth costs $199.99, and both can be pre-ordered via the Bhphotovideo.com website.

We’re curious to see how suitable it is for the outdoors at the end. The size definitely makes it a good option, also as a fallback for filming. It’s easier to hide under clothing than some transmitters. The scope of delivery includes an LMF-2 lavalier microphone incl. Clip and pop screen.
