Xiaomi Mi5C with Self-made Surge S1 SoC Announced

Along with the budget segment Redmi 4X, the Chinese giant also announced the very special device called the Xiaomi Mi5C in China. The handset is special for the home grown company as it is powered by Xiaomi’s own developed processor – the Surge S1. It is an Octa-Core SoC based on 28nm process with four ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and the other four power-efficient ARM Cortex A53 cores are clocked at 1.4GHz. Xiaomi Mi5c

Xiaomi Surge S1

Xiaomi Surge S1 SoC is an octa-core 64-bit processor that runs up to 2.2GHz at max frequency. The octa-core SoC dissects into four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four other power-efficient ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz. The GPU is Mali-T860 quad-core that brings 40 percent improved power efficiency, when compared to previous Mali-T760 GPU. It has a 32-bit DSP for better voice processing for calls, and also dual microphones for noise reduction.

The Surge S1 processor integrates 14-bit dual ISP and own developed Surge ISP algorithm that claims to improve camera light sensitivity by up to 150 percent, and the dual noise reduction algorithm also preserves detail in low light. Xiaomi said that it took only 28 months for the processor from planning to large scale production and it is made by Xiaomi and Pinecone. “The design objectives are to balance performance and power efficiency and to produced in a large scale,” said the company. The company also says that it beats the 14nm Snapdragon 625 and both MediaTek Helio P10 as well as P20 in Geekbench 4.0 CPU multi-core benchmark and GFXBench Manhattan off-screen benchmark.

Xiaomi Mi5C features a 5.15-inch IPS LCD display with 2.5D curved glass, Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution with 550nit brightness, 1500:1 contrast ratio, and 94.4 percent NTSC color gamut. It is powered by a 2.2 GHz 64-bit Octa-Core processor that’s backed by all new Xiaomi Surge S1 chipset clubbed Mali-T860 GPU and 3GB of RAM. It packs a 64GB of inbuilt storage.

On the camera front, the Mi5C bears a 12-megapixel rear autofocus camera with f/2.2 aperture, 6P lens, PDAF, 1.25 μm pixel size, 27-mm wide angle lens and LED flash. There is an 8-megapixel front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture and 27 mm wide-angle lens for selfie and video chatting. The Xiaomi Mi5C should run Android 7.0 Nougat and the company also claimed that it can be upgradable to Android 7.1 Nougat OS. It packs a 2860mAh battery with fast charging support. For connectivity includes, 4G VoLTE, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS, A-GPS, Bluetooth 4.1, USB Type-C and Dual SIM supports. It measures 144.38 x 69.68 x7.09 mm, and weighs 135 grams.

The Mi5C price in China is set to 1499 CNY – approximately $218 / INR 14,560 and comes in Rose Gold, Gold and Black color variants. It will be made available in China starting from 3rd March 2017.
