Western Digital launches WD Red SN700 M.2 NVMe NAS SSD

The new PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 2280 NAS SSD from Western Digital may not be able to keep up with the fastest storage solutions on the market, but with their reasonable prices, they should represent reliable components for the domestic NAS server.

Western Digital WD Red SN700 M.2 2280 NAS SSD

A storage manufacturer Western Digital recently officially released its WD Red SN700 series of Internal Solid State Drive designed for NAS servers. These PCIe 3.0 Internal SSD are not among the fastest SSDs on the market, where for example the PlayStation 5 compatible Crucial P5 Plus with PCIe 4.0 should offer significantly better write and read speeds.

The WD Red SN700 NAS SSD is definitely faster than the conventional hard drives or 2.5-inch SSDs often used in NAS servers. It comes in the well-known M.2 2280 format and, with its TLC memory offers read speeds of up to 3100 megabytes per second and write speeds of up to 1600 megabytes per second. The 4 TB model of the WD Red SN700 is said to have a shelf life of 5100 written terabytes and thus works for a long time without problems even in data-hungry servers.

WD Red SN700 price and availability

The manufacturer gives a five-year guarantee. The WD Red SN700 is available in capacities of 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB. The recommended retail prices are between $64.99 and $479.99 for the 4TB model. The Amazon.com and Newegg.com online retailers have already listed the new M.2 2280 SSD from Western Digital.

Earlier this month, EK together with Seagate introduced the FireCuda 530 SSD Heatsink. It is equipped with an EK radiator, an anodized aluminum heatsink with a finely textured surface to improve heat transfer is said to allow the FireCuda 530 to “run at top speed for extended periods.” The drive uses an E18 controller and 3D TLC NAND memory. This combination allows you to achieve data transfer rates up to 7300 MB/s.
