Walrus Audio unveils ERAS Five-State Distortion Pedal

That will please fans of harder genres: According to the manufacturer, the new Walrus Audio ERAS stands for high-gain five-state distortion, ideal for a chug, shred, and palm mute with a tight response and multiple distortion textures.

The ERAS comes in an enchanting shimmering red case with artwork by Adam Forster. It depicts a mythical four-horned winged bull ready to storm any mosh pit. In the center of the distortion pedal is the mode switch, a rotary switch with 5 positions.

Each position represents a different combination of clipping diodes and internal gain settings. Each mode emphasizes certain character strengths of the pedal, which should make this distortion very versatile. The modes are divided as follows:

  1. Tight mode with a slight mid-cut, LED hard clipping, and internal volume control. Fastest response, great for palm muting.
  2. Tight mode with a slight mid-cut and silicon hard clipping. Smooth with added compression.
  3. Dual clipping mode with a slight mid-cut and both silicon and LED hard clipping. Rich & full with added sustain.
  4. Rhythm mode with a deeper mid-cut, LED hard clipping, and internal volume control. Scooped mids, tight response.
  5. Rhythm mode with a deeper mid-cut and silicon hard clipping. Rhythmic, warm and full.

Since the mode switch changes the internal gain and clipping settings, this also affects the behavior of the other controls.

The blend control is used to set the mix ratio between the completely clean input signal and the distorted signal. By mixing the clean and distortion signals, the clarity of the sound can be increased, as the clean and distorted channels within the ERAS run parallel to each other. The blend control is also ideal for bassists. We’re already looking forward to the first audio sample!

The bass component of the ERAS reacts interactively with the gain control, so that with a higher gain there is more bass, while the signal has less bass with a lower gain. That’s exactly to our taste! The bass control can also be used to reduce or increase the low frequencies after the distortion.

Walrus Audio ERAS price and availability

The Walrus Audio ERAS distortion pedal costs $199 and it is already available to buy at the Amazon.com website.

Earlier this year, Wampler has also introduced the new Ratsbane Overdrive Distortion pedal with classic RAT sounds that we all know and love into a wonderfully compact mini pedal and is priced at $149.97.
