Viltrox Jueying Technology has released a version of its AF 28mm F4.5 Z lens for Nikon Z cameras. It was introduced for E-mount last fall and for X-mount four months ago. It’s a so-called “pancake” lens, marketed by Viltrox as a “chip” similar to potato chips, and it’s very thin, indeed, protruding just 15mm above the mount.

This is the lightest and thinnest lens ever created by Viltrox. Using it turns a mirrorless camera into a compact one. The AF 28mm F4.5 Z has a vintage style, so it looks very harmonious with, for example, a Nikon Zf camera.
The optical design remains unchanged despite its miniature size. It includes six elements, including two aspherical ones to reduce distortion and enhance image clarity across the frame and two extra-low dispersion elements to minimize chromatic aberrations, resulting in crisp, bright images with accurate color rendition. An HD nano-coating is used to reduce flare. The aperture is constant – F4.5.
The manufacturer promises fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus with support for eye focusing. The Viltrox 28mm F4.5 does not require a front cap, as it, like the two previous versions, has a built-in front lens closing and opening mechanism. The lens body is made of aluminum alloy. The front lens also has a hydrophobic coating. There is a USB Type-C connector on the bayonet side.
