Viltrox 23mm, 33mm, and 56mm T1.5 for Micro Four Thirds

Viltrox has introduced three cinema lenses: Viltrox 23mm T1.5, 33mm T1.5, and 56mm T1.5 for Micro Four Thirds cameras. All lenses, as they should be for a set of cinema optics, have the same outer diameter, length, and arrangement of the focus and aperture rings.

In 2021, Viltrox introduced a similar series of three fast cine lenses designed specifically for Sony E cameras with an APS-C sensor. The current lenses are essentially the same, only for Micro Four Thirds.

MFT compatibility is a step in the right direction, as this set will perfectly fit with many popular mirrorless cameras, including Panasonic’s flagship LUMIX GH6 and the equally popular Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.

However, we should not forget that the crop factor for MFT cameras is stronger than for APS-C, and focal lengths of 23, 33, and 56 mm will not work quite the same as in the case of APS-C, this set lacks a wider angle, for example, for shooting an interview, the operator will receive mostly large and medium shots. In addition, the difference between 23 and 33 mm is almost imperceptible.

The lenses are in order with aperture – they all provide a maximum aperture of T1.5, which will be very useful for the MFT, especially in low light conditions. The aperture is clickless, it has 14 blades, and the company promises smooth, round bokeh. Of course, lenses without autofocus, are fully manual, both for focus and aperture.

All three lenses have the same dimensions – 72×75 mm, the position of the focusing rings and aperture are the same, which means easy replacement without the need to reconfigure additional equipment, such as a follow focus.

The lenses are made of aluminum and weigh approximately 500g each. The 0.8 MOD serrated rings and 153° rotation of the focusing ring ensure precise focusing. The size of the filter is 62 mm.

The optical design of the 33 and 56mm lenses consists of 10 elements in 9 groups, and the 23mm lens consists of 11 elements in 10 groups. The design includes ED glass with low dispersion as well as high refraction elements, the front element has a multi-layer nano-coating. According to the company, the optics are capable of delivering sharp images with minimal distortion, chromatic aberration, and minimal focus breathing.
