Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 Di III VXD for Sony: specs, release date, and price

While the Japanese third-party lens manufacturer has reduced its range of lenses for (D)SLRs in recent years, it is continuously expanding its range of lenses for mirrorless cameras. At the moment, the focus is primarily on lenses with Sony E mount. In mid-August 2022, Tamron announced the full format wide angle zoom “20-40mm f2.8 Di III VXD” with E-Mount.

Almost six weeks later, the time has come: the Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 Di III VXD has been officially announced with all the specs, release date, and pricing details. However, interested users now have to wait another month, because the market launch will not take place until October 27, 2022.

The Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 Di III VXD is a new compact, wide-angle, fast zoom lens. Designed for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras, the lens is an excellent choice for many everyday photos and video shoots. With a zoom range from 20mm ultra-wide angle to the 40mm standard focal length, it is the smallest and lightest lens in its class (compared to fast zooms for mirrorless full-frame cameras with Sony E mount).

The 20-40mm f2.8 achieves outstanding imaging performance over the entire focal length range. It is ideal for both demanding photography and creating creative videos for vlogs. The new lens features the proven Tamron VXD autofocus with a linear motor (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive). The VXD technology is characterized by particularly quiet and agile focusing, which achieves high precision even in dynamic situations. The shortest possible focusing distance of just 0.17 m and the maximum magnification of 1:3.8 in the wide-angle range make the lens recommendable for expressive close-ups as well.

The 20-40mm f2.8 is also a handy, easy-to-transport lens. It offers a constant open aperture of 1:2.8 over the entire zoom range from 20mm to 40mm and is compact and light with a length of only 86.5mm and a weight of 365g.

The 40mm standard focal length is primarily suitable for snapshots, portraits, and food photos, and the 20mm ultra-wide-angle focal length for landscape shots with a striking depth effect – something that can be achieved with a conventional fast standard zoom lens with a starting focal length of 24mm is difficult to achieve.

It’s also well-balanced when paired with camera accessories or gimbal stabilization systems. It’s a universal lens that won’t miss a photo or video opportunity, whether it’s spontaneous everyday shots, rambling landscapes, and cityscapes while traveling or selfies with wide backgrounds.
