With the DS1823xs+, Synology has introduced a new network storage device with an AMD processor. The Synology DiskStation DS1823xs+ can accommodate eight mass storage devices and is equipped with a PCIe port.
With the DiskStation DS1823xs+, Synology is now offering a new, high-performance network storage device, with which the company is likely to be aimed less at private users than at (smaller) entrepreneurs. According to the manufacturer, the system supports a gross storage capacity of 144 terabytes – which can still be expanded using expansion housings.
There are eight slots for a hard drive or SSD in 3.5 or 2.5-inch format. The installation of up to two M.2 2280 SSDs is possible, whereby the drives can be connected via NVMe. As a rule, fast SSDs are used in such network storage devices for caching to further accelerate data access. Synology puts the sequential read performance at up to 3,100 MB/s, and write speeds of up to 2,600 MB/s should be possible.
The connection to a network can be made via a total of three Gigabit Ethernet ports. A fourth RJ-45 port allows data transmission at up to 10 GBit/s. There is an expansion port connected via four PCIe 3.0 lanes, in which network cards can also be installed. The 166 x 343 x 243-millimeter storage system comes with two eSATA ports and three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports – this makes it easy to back up external data carriers, and the capacity can also be expanded to up to 324 TB with the help of two DX517 expansion units.
An AMD Ryzen V1708B is installed, which can access an 8 GB DDR4 memory in the delivery state. The memory can be expanded up to 32 GB. Synology advertises a large range of functions, so data can not only be organized but also protected. Synology’s Collaboration Suite allows collaboration, and the network storage can also use virtual machines.
