Sony unveils FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens for Portraits and Street Photography

Sony has introduced a new full-frame lens for mirrorless cameras with an E-mount. They are the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens designed to capture portraits, astrophotography, landscape and street photography.

The lens turned out to be very light and compact (84.7 mm and a diameter of 73.5 mm). Its weight is 373 grams. The minimum focusing distance is 19 centimeters. In manual focus mode – 18 centimeters.

The design of the lens uses two extreme dynamic (XD) Linear Motors, which provide smooth, accurate and silent autofocus (including in the eyes in real-time).

The lens has nine aperture blades and a range from F/1.8 to F/22. It also has an aperture control ring. There is an auto/manual aperture switch on the lens itself. The maximum magnification ratio is 0.20x (AF) or 0.22x (MF).

The optical design of the new lens from Sony consists of 14 elements in 12 groups, two advanced aspherical (AA) elements, and three extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements.

Testers claim that the autofocus drive works just fine with both the Sony A7RIV camera and the new Sony FX9 camera. There is a focus hold button on the lens body (through the menu, various functions can be assigned to it).

At the same time, the lens is also dustproof and moisture resistant. The front element of the lens has a special fluorine coating, thanks to which raindrops or fingerprints dissipate very quickly.

Price and Availability

Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens has been priced at $898 and it can be pre-ordered through Bhphotovideo.com store. This new street photography lens should go on sale in March 2020.
